Hello, I have a question about hosting. It would not be on my servers of course but since doing one for my friend, I have noticed that I would have to pay for the registration from my credit card and register the domain to my name.

This is where it troubles me, having my name and credit card number on file for clients bothers me. Of course I can have a yearly maintenance fee charged that way if they need changes I can handle, but in reality it seems too much trouble than it is worth.

What do you do when clients know nothing about hosting and domain registration? Do you just hand over the files for their site and send them off?

I appreciate your input.

You can register the domain name and open an account under your own name/business. It is easier if you register the domain name and have the web site hosted by the same company (i.e. GoDaddy). If your friend wants control, have him/her open up an account and you can transfer the domain name. I do this regularly with clients who don't understand or want to be bothered by the whole domain registration/web hosting thing.
Hope this helps.

Ciao!

That is good, but here is my concern, not knowing what could endup on my clients website, claims or whatever (lets say something that crosses the boundaries of copyright and such) then I do not want to be involved.

But like you said, they can always open a new account and I can transfer the domain name to them.

If something bad happens, you can always take the site down since you have control over the web host. ;)

Just tell your clients that you need their credit card information to sign them up for hosting and a domain name. I've never had anyone balk at giving it to me. You're doing them a favor!

Wascally Wabbit!!

I generally prefer not to deal with someone elses credit card. I do it for them and charge the client back.
