Bicast leather (also known as bycast leather or PU leather) is a synthetic upholstery product consisting of a thick polyurethane (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Polyurethane) layer applied to a leather (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Leather) or reconstituted leather (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bonded_Leather) substrate. It is commonly found in inexpensive furniture.
Because bicast leather is fundamentally a man-made product, some jurisdictions (such as New Zealand (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_Zealand) and the United Kingdom (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_Kingdom)) have ruled that it cannot be marketed as leather.
I've just been drooling at furniture catalogues and the term bicast leather kept popping up. So I looked it up to figure out what they mean. I wish people wouldn't call things leather when it's not!
---end rant---
