Hi everyone, I'm hoping to bounce some ideas around about my portfolio site. It isn't finished yet, but I've come to some difficult problems on deciding whether or not I should keep going at it with my current design.
I'll try to keep it short and sweet.
Basic viewing layout:
http://www.johntgordon.com/port_test/viewer_active.jpg
And when the mouse is inactive, a background fadeout comes into play (focus on work blah blah): click here to view (http://www.johntgordon.com/port_test/viewer_inactive.jpg)
Some swfs to give the idea on how the parts will work:
Bottom picture nav button playthingy here (http://www.johntgordon.com/port_test/Untitled-1.swf) (my image preloader seems to have stopped working unfortunately >.<, the images aren't imbeded however).
Still have the "I'm currently here" and "I've visited here before" features to code in on this part of the nav.
Large Navigation concept (the bottom link would be the "active" section)here (http://www.johntgordon.com/port_test/menu_test.swf).
Large Navigation transitions concept here (http://www.johntgordon.com/port_test/transition.swf).
The idea with the main nav is that the section that was clicked on will become active and switch places with the old active section (i.e. on the above image, either "web" or "3d" would be clickable while "print" would be the current active section) via a transition of something resembling ink blotting or growing/fading in to the wall background (not really timed great atm)
More information on each image would be available when the user rolls over the image an image wipe would occur so that pertinent information was displayed and on roll out the image would wipe back in (no clicking).
Another idea is to have the background color change with the image displayed will match a bit more pleasingly in some cases.
First of all... too grungy? overdone? should I take a different tack?
If the above is no, my main concern is transitions and getting them to match the background & "look". Basically, the big problem is the resume, contact, portfolio buttons, and how they are to move. Frankly, I pretty much have no idea.
It looks funny having semi transparent text move over a textured background. But the stuff needs to move. I'd rather not use the same transition the larger navigation items use, so my only real idea is to make them seperate sort of tape on lables or blocks of some kind. And I'm lost there.
If you guys have anything that I'm overlooking or missing so far it'd be very much appreciated. Heck even starting over again is fine at this point. I've been working on this off and on for a while now so it's picked up that glass eyed "meh? dunno what to do with you" look to me.
I appreciate the help ;)
