shortcut - type tool to selection tool

An easy question for someone I hope.
This problem is starting to annoy me and i'm trying to be as efficient with illustrator as possible. When i am using the type tool - typing, as you may guess - then I want to switch to the direct selection tool - usually Command V - But it just types a V so i have use the mouse.
Whats the secret!

Press Command-Shift-A to deselect the type and then type V.

Or, you can press the Command key on the mac (ctrl on pc?), which automatically switches to the direct selection tool temporarily (as long as that key is held). If you want to switch to it permanently, once you press the command key (ctrl on pc?), just click anywhere on the page, then let go of the key, and press "v".
