I am working with files that were already started and the original person had all the text in text boxes - I am having to add things and jog things around a bit and want everything - like each separate line in a separate box so i can move them around - Is there an automatic way to do this without selecting and cutting and pasting each line of text?
What program are you working on?

Oops - Illustrator
I misread your question the first time I read it, usually people are trying to get broken up text back to a paragraph format LOL. I don't know of any easy way to do what you want, sorry. http://home.comcast.net/~rnick9/koolsmiley.gif

If you're 100% sure that the text is correct and will not need changing (and for the love of all things fluffy keep a back-up) you can convert the text to outlines.
The ungroup the text, each letter should now be an individual graphic.
Drag over each line and group them.
Still a long winded solution but it will work. Also the solution is likely to cause you some major problems in the future.
I take it that this problem can't be fixed with changing the leading value?

I read the original post as:
You want to be able to highlight a line or paragraph of text, and drag it to another spot in the text box. Normally in Illy you can only highlight the text, copy, delete and then paste it into the new spot you want it in.
Word will let you drag text to a new position, but as far as I know, Illustrator doesn't.
Sorry, can't help, but just wanted to see if I could clarify the question so that others can help. :)

I can just change the leading but it is more of a pain - guess i'm just more adept at lining up and moving the text boxes around.
Well I already changed it on one - so i'll just use that as my template from now on.
Thanks for all the quick answers!

Changing the leading is a pain? I'd think that moving text boxes around would be more of a pain. What if the copy changes? For the life of me I'm having a hard time figuring out why text boxes are not a good solution for what you're trying to do, at least with large chunks of text, unless you're working on a headline and are varying sizes and such.

Yeah - it isn't a lot of text - basically some contact info of varying sizes. You can still change the type if it's in different text boxes.
If i had a lot of type i would definitly use the text box or Indesign instead of Illustrator.
I made a template of it so it is all good now.

Okay, that clarifies it a bit. I guess I prefer working with text boxes, and don't see them as a pain. In addition, with separate text boxes, if you move one box down, it doesn't affect anything else, so you have to grab those and move them down also. You don't have to do that when you're using leading, leading changes also affect the lines beneath.
Just chalk it up to a workflow preference, I guess.
