Problem:

I'm building a catalog in InDesign - the cover is a raster .tif in CMYK. To help explain this as best as possible, the primary color is 51 64 82 59.

For page 2, I drew a rectangle within InDesign with those exact same values.

On the display, the colors appear to match perfect.

When printed, the raster image appears much differently than the vector object of the same color.

The exact same thing happens when done in Illustrator (which i did as a test). So it's an issue of raster vs. vector, but I have no idea why this is happening.

Anyone?

Thanks,

are your color settings the same in each program, and did you embed them into them into the Tiff?

Double check that the tiff is indeed in CMYK format and not RGB with a CMYK colour dropped onto it.

Is Illustrator in RGB Color Mode or CMYK?

Do any of your printing preferences have anything "non standard" in them, e.g. an RGB conversion or a Color Profile?

These can be some of the most common problems, certainly not all though.

Color settings are identical - it IS a CMYK .tif with the profile embedded.

Illustrator IS in CMYK mode.

No clue....I've seen this before too and would like to get it fiigure out. Waiting for a call from a friend; hopefully we can figure it out.

What platform are you using and what kind of print and printer.

Right now I'm on a PC (day job) running XP if thats what you're looking for. All CS2.

Printer is some big HP 5500 color laser.

But I've had this same problem on my Mac G5 at home using an Epson.

HP5500 isn't a laser.

"HP5500 isn't a laser."

Yep, it is.

hp color LaserJet 5500hdn

But that is somewhat irrelevant - It does this on my cheap epson inkjet at home....its something in the programs themselves.....

It has a lot to do with your color settings.
Do you have Illustrator and InD set to the same profile as your image? Just saying they are all CMYK doesn't cut it.
Do you have Bridge (CS2)? You can integrate your color management across Adobe CS2 programs using Bridge.
(HP5500 is also a wide format inkjet printer. ;) You'd be surprised how much this actually was pertinent to your question. Wide format printers and colors are my daily nightmare.)

Any profile messages when you placed the image? What are the profile handling settings? And to eleminate the wild card-- any transparency issues to contend with?
