How much rent do you pay compared to how much you make? Just want to see if there is much difference across the world.

Rent divided by wage.

Example if your rent was 1000 per month and your pay after tax is 4000 per month this equals 25% or 0.25

With the wife's income and mine combined we're a little under 20%. I have no idea
how, but there you go.

mine was a little over 40% - but maybe that's why I had to sell the house.

(and YES, I am bitter...)

frankster

we're up at nearly 50%, but then it's the bay area, so it's extortionate.

There are plus points to the area though. Like today we had the weirdest experience of running into Jose "Chepito" Areas in the local Fresh Choice at lunch time!?! He was drinking beers and talking to us about playing woodstock and all the cool people he's got to be on stage with over the years. Weirder still he was wearing a gigantic spiderman shirt and pinstriped trousers!?! The kids thought he was funny. I love experiences like that, where you wonder if you've woken up yet or if Mitch Mitchell is going to walk in wearing a tutu and a fez.

I guess I am lucky at 26% and able to walk to work so I spend nothing on car, petrol, parking or bus fare. We pay more to live in the city, but since I don't have transport costs, it works out much cheaper.

I'm somewhat over 30%, but I live on my own in a fairly large flat in Mt Eden.

(For those of you who don't live in Auckland, Mt Eden is pretty much the opposite of a cheap place to live.)

budafist
03-10-2007, 12:03 PM
That's hella cheap Hewligan! There are 4 people paying rent at my place and I'm still paying 26% - so 30% for 1 person aint bad at all.

By the way, did you go see the fireworks tonight?

hewligan
03-10-2007, 12:06 PM
It's not that cheap. I'm on a fixed term contract, but it's a very well paid fixed term contract...

And I missed the fireworks - I was off visitting my parents for my dad's birthday.

Why does the poll stop at 100%? Mine is 110% of my salary.

Since I do not pay rent; If I was I'd be living in a neighbourhood where I would be paying 25% of my pay... not too bad I think.

Ned
03-12-2007, 07:58 AM
When has Ned ever been serious?
*gasp* Riya, I'm hurt! I'm seriously hurt...

And no, I wasn't serious. Though it certainly does feel like it...
My rent is actually very low, but my overhead with all my other bills is extremely high.

I'm at 24%, if we're basing it on net pay.

between my wife and i we're at about 15% in san francisco. we rent now though, and we're looking to buy. the house we're looking at is going to put us at more like 25-30% if our wages stay the same. though she gets a raise every year and business has been slightly better for me each year than the one before.

Between my wife salary and mine the mortgage on the house is about 7% of our income. Living in a town of less than 28,000 people does have a few advantages.

With the wife and I about 17% ... It's kind of nice to know that. Our car payments add another 12% though. Man, I can't wait to pay the cars off.

40% using my take home pay without my wife's income, which isn't steady. She doesn't have a full time job at the moment. We rent a two bedroom apartment.

CamarotaDesign
03-13-2007, 06:30 PM
14%?! How'd you manage that Camarota?

I re-estimated it and I was a little off, it's closer to 17% My expsenses are pretty low, I split a small 2 bedroom apartment in the top part of a house with my brother. And I'm getting a wage now that is fairly decent for the area I live in.

Also, living up here at the very top of the Central Valley is waaaaaay cheaper than the rest of California.

My apartment takes up about 31%, although I live in a friggin fancy new urbanism area. My bills are all paid and I have plenty of money left over to pay down debts (so...so close to 0 debt now) and have fun, so I think I'm doing pretty good.

I'm at 18% with me alone, or 9% if you count the gf.

Just shy of 60%

My wife isn't working for the time being.
Once she works it'll go down signifigantly.
I'm putting net pay, so it is after taxes and after 401K contributions and after health insurance (paying just shy of 9K in Health insurance per year).
Hopefully when wifey goes back to work, it'll be in a Hospital or school where paid Health insurance is part of the package).

It's net. I had to review Buda's original post, but that's what she's referring to.

DesignStudio
03-14-2007, 01:06 PM
well i know that it's net, i guess i didn't know if 401k and roth contributions count as an expense that was part of your income, or are considered "taken out" like taxes. since it is something that we choose to put in, it isn't deductted by the workplace.

Mynock

You can't pay your rent with 401k.

Well I figured it would have to be net pay because everyone's taxes vary across the world.

DesignStudio
03-15-2007, 12:24 AM
yeah i knew it was net, i just wasn't clear whether 401k and other investments were deducted to get your net. i suppose since those investments are pre-tax that they would be taken out to get your net. i just didn't want to think about it that much myself. i'm glad mynock came through with his less than helpful feedback though, because i think obvious man is going to be a new installation that i continue in the forum whereever possible. sounds like fun. i got that guy off the internet, i have no idea who he is. maybe one day he'll see his face all over this forum and wonder how he got on here.

Net, with the combined income of my wife and I our mortgage is about 10% of our monthly income.

DesignStudio
03-15-2007, 05:46 PM
oooh, are you getting a little mad at me mynock? don't be mad, we can still be friends, i didn't mean to hurt your feelings. i didn't ask if i could pay my rent with my 401k, although technically i can if i want, i just have to suffer the early withdrawl pentalties- so i wouldn't. i just was unclear whether what you choose to put in there is still part of your net. after thinking about it i'm guessing the distinction is that it's pre-tax? because i can't pay rent with my grocery money either, or the money i use to get my dog's hair cut etc. but that's all still part of my net. i guess what had me questioning it is because any month of course i could choose to put nothing in my 401k, or to put in less etc. i sort of felt like net income was the income that you have autonomy over after manditory expenses and deductions (taxes) are made. some institutions seem to define it as simply as total income minus all expenses- which would mean that your net is basically your profit, after rent, after groceries, after cell phone and cable bill, after gas, and after beer. so basically your net income would be only whatever you couldn't manage to spend by the end of the month and put into your savings. but that doesn't seem right to me either. anyway, so the point is, here's another picture of a random person I pulled off the internet for you, enjoy:

wow, that was nice. made me laugh right out loud. not the belly laugh, but a good solid chuckle. i'm generally opposed to the IM and forum abbreviations for things like laughing, lol and whatnot, so i just had to describe it to you. except of course Kitty's/macfinn's ROFLMAOSMIHAISCBIHBIAGWYK.

anyway, i don't know if i can compete with that. generally the rules would be to pick a picture that has something to do with what i said, but yours is so well done i think it rises above any need for meaning and just floats into awesomeness. it would have been acceptable to just take once sentence from what i said, but i like the extra effort you made in pasting the entire paragraph. and you claim you've never played this game before. ha.

well in the spirit of totally random pictures:

That's priceless! Not only are the dudes dancing fabulous, but it appears to be in a hotel carpark!?! and what's with the old woman that has fallen asleep stood up? This is some weird screen shot from a bizarre dream, not real life, surely! I didn't bump into any 70's music legends at the store today, but even that's no guarantee that I'm awake these days.
