Just been putting together the flyer for a bar here in Nottingham, UK (which I'm also about to be resident at too. :) ). It's a bit of a change to my usual style but I really liked it.

The bar has a slightly more mature clientelle (23-40) than a lot of place I design for and I wanted the design to reflect that. I purposefully kept it clean and simple. I also wanted to reflect the name of the bar (tonic) with the graphics without having to resort to really obvious bubbles or liquid effects.

One thing that's difficult to see at this resolution is the wood-grain effect in the shapes. Each colour has a different grain at a different angle so make them stand out from one another like inlaid carving.

All comments appreciated...

Really like it. Very clean, very professional. I do not like the font used for the information, but thats easy to fix.

I like the colors and the wood grain.

But, like Morea said before, i have seen that A/Q/"bubbles" symbol so damn much.

yea i know they've been "done". i liked them to make shapes with (rather than just use them in a logo alone).

ah, the infamous q/a shape. Well I think you did it with a fresh perspective, made it interesting. Your headline font choice matches it's shape very well. Nice work as usual.

I think I feel the same as relic, not a big fan of the serif font you are using for the text. I might try some different serifs out.

I really enjoy your work, but your letterspacing always feels a little too tight for me. I'm not saying make it spacy, but just a smidge more open. Otherwise, with the comments about the body text that I also agree with, I think it looks great.

I also agree with the comments about the body text.

Another thing that bothers me is the box around the tonic logo on the front. Does it have to be there? Is it an integral part of the logo? My eyes get stuck there because it. If it's possible to loose it, then I would - then the logo could sit on the same baseline as "all about the music". Infact, I'd swap the position of the logo and "all about the music". Probably just a personal thing, though.

I like it. I think I'll even go, just a quick jaunt down the road from Lincoln. Just need to get off my lazy ass first. :)

When's it starting Alex? Can you PM me where it is in Notts as well?

Cheers. :D

The logo does have that box around it and I can't remove it :( i thought the same as well.

re: the body font choice : it's funny - i honestly disagree with everyone. I really like it. :)

spug : the bar is right in the centre of Nottingham, about 50m from the square, up on Chapel Bar (next to Angel Row) - underneath the Holiday Inn Xpress (which also contains Fat Cats, ASK, Las Iguanas and China China). It's all kicking off at the end of this month.

Ah yes, I know the area.

Time to convince the boys that a trip to Nottingham is required. Draw straws for the designated driver. :D

I actually agree with you. By that logic, you don't disagree with everyone, so you're going to have to disagree with me. Or something...

For real though, I actually like the body font. Works for me.

I think they'll look pretty sweet printed. Can't wait to see them in my hands. :)

That looks fabulous! I always look forward to opening you posts...:)

I can see the wood grain effect, perhaps also the body text legibility has to do with the res on here, if ou like it go with it.

I still see a difference in the logo connection to your pattern...

gotta add that ive over-seen the bubbles. I immediately thought of the bahamas logo. (heres their homepage... www.bahamas.de)

well, when you have your level of skill, you can afford to blow other opinions off. Honestly, do whatever you want, it almost always kicks ass.

I think it looks nice, love the colors used...

but i'm also in the same boat with the others regarding the partridge family graphics... but thats just personal preference.

I don't mind that the graphics evoke similar shapes already in use...your treatment, and the wood grain is fresh enough to differentiate the look. Nice job.

I like it, but I not fond of the serif font on such a clean design. Perhaps try a semi-serif font like Rotis semi-serif (http://www.linotype.com/49244/rotissemiserif55roman-font.html?PHPSESSID=25b7aafa60e1d931b7461ee18cccb5 57) as a comprimise?

you can like really like it all day long, but that doesn't make it any less difficult to read. sorry, i'm with the group on this one. don't put form over function. The rest of the design is great though. the overall feel is really cool, very modern and clean, but a little vintagy at the same time. and so what those shapes are a bit overused. there's nothing new under the sun and you're presenting it in a new cool way that has its own style. foucoult wasn't the first one to paint a pipe, and warhol wasn't the first to do a portraits or still lifes.

i think it looks spectacular! nice job!

re: the text

massive bone of contention on this then! haha. Are you finding it difficult to read because of form? or because of its direct visibility? If it's visibility, this is because you're viewing a low-res preview of it. I've seen it in print now and it's perfectly readable.

Interesting remarks tho for sure...this is what the showcase section is about!

it might just be because of the smaller size and resolution. readability was the only issue for me, i like the look of the font, just took a little effort to read. if it's nicely readable at printed size then go with it!

I actually factored this in when I commented. Yes, it's difficult to read on screen at 72 or 96 dpi, I'm sure it's a separate matter entirely when in print.
