OK, I don't know why i havent asked you guys this before.... because ther is no better place to ask :)
Is there a way in illy to highlight some text... and then scroll through the fonts by pressing up or down arrow? and the font changes on the fly? instead of scrolling through the list and picking one after the other?
this would make choosing a font so much easier
thanks guys

It works for me.
Highlight the text.
Click on the font box at the top of the page.
Use Cursor keys to go up and down the font list.
The text should update as you do this.

i think that this feature was added in CS2, but isn't available in CS1 if i remember. i bet that's your issue. so the answer is, yes there is a way, update your software. but wait a month until you can buy CS3.

Ah yes, this is ringing a few bells.
Pre upgrade I used PhotoShop CS1 to do it. Scanned through the font's to find the required in PhotoShop then used information in other programmes.
PhotoShop doesn't like it sometimes though. Never was amazing at handling a bucket of fonts. It works most of the time though. :)

In Illustrator CS2 on the Mac, this feature is broken (using the arrow key to move through the font menu). It's a known bug that Adobe hasn't fixed since the release of CS2. However, this works just fine in InDesign.
I wonder if Adobe ever actually fixes bugs anymore. It always seems like we have to wait for the next major version to be released, which fixes some old bugs, but gives us new ones that are never fixed. Their updates never seem to solve any of the well-known problems that are mentioned on the Adobe forums.
I have liked Adobe less and less as the years have passed. And now that they're closer to being a monopoly in desktop publishing then ever before, I only expect it to get worse.

Apple has been pretty good about supporting older hardware. I think you can install 10.4 on a G3 (probably really pokey unless you turn off the dashboard)
We have an old bondi blue imac that we use for billing and that is running 10.3 just fine and I think that came from the factory running 8.6 or 9.0.

I do what you're trying to do in suitcase. Then I can scroll through fonts I haven't activated too.

I do what you're trying to do in suitcase. Then I can scroll through fonts I haven't activated too. You beat me to it. I use Linotype Font Explorer X for looking at font samples,
activated or not.
