I am starting this thread as a venue for displaying Wacom artwork. Please only display work completed on your Wacom, or other tablets.
Reason:
I spent weeks looking for the right Wacom. I looked everywhere and just didnt feel satisfied. I really wanted to read what others had to say about thier Wacoms.... the sizes, the functions, and so on....... I also wanted to see a variety of artwork done using tablets.
I would like this to be a thread that others can use to view digital work completed via Wacom (or other) tablets, and a resource for those interested in getting a Wacom of thier own.
Thanks, and please enjoy.
.
I am new to my Wacom.... but I plan for us to become great friends.
Here is a look at my first Wacom sketch:

I bought a wacom graphire 3 just to play around with - I use it more for artwork than design work...but every now and then I find the need for it.
Definitely what brenton said - buy a smaller higher quality one...you don't need them to be that large (as a matter of personal taste really...try one out first) so you should spend the extra money on the intuos 4x6 or 6x8.
You can do a lot of interesting things with Corel Painter and a Wacom, but PS and Illy have their merit for it too.
This is one of my earliest wacom pieces - done from a reference photograph of a subway.

I'm intrigued by the Wacom and am considering getting one. I'd be using it more as a tool to assist in my PhotoShop editting techniques though.
I can't draw for nothing, seriously it's awful. My forté is in adjusting something that already exists. Will the Wacom help me or will it be more of a gimmick that I use for a few weeks and will be gathering dust in a couple of months time?
The outline of my goat avatar was done in Illustrator for me.
I modified it, added the background and crossbones, and did all the shading with the Wacom Intuos 3.

For the most part I agree. However, I went with the Intuos 3 9x12, and so far I love it. But I have the desk space, and dual monitors. Wacom of course suggested an even larger one... but I really like this one. I debated and debated, and contacted a couple of digital illustrators via email, and they also promoted the near 1 to 1 ratio I would get from the 9x12. So right now I have the tablet set to work on my left screen.
Pretty sweet.
Oh, to anyone with a Wacom, who isnt using it...... Start using it!!! Or give it to a friend at the GDF who would get some use out of it.

This is a mix for me... drew on paper and coloured scanned image in painter. Hope that counts... used my ol' school Graphite 2... I'd love to go and nab a Intuos one day... when I get the cash the nabbing will happen.

Using a 6x8 Intuos 3, fits me just right (I always used to doodle on computer paper, so I guess that's where the familiarity comes from I think).
Start of a web banner that turned out not to be the wanted direction (skull and wings are from photos).

I really enjoy trying to make digital "paintings", I'm still learning though, but someday...

I still havent taken my tablet into photoshop. I've primarily used photoshop for photo manipulation, havent used it really for creating art/digital paintings since I started using illustrator 5 years ago.
Do you guys have any good links for tips using a tablet with photoshop? I want to get in on this stuff!!!
I wish I did have some good link.... but I just dont. If I find some I will definately post them here...
If anyone else has some good wacom tips / tutorials links..... please post them here.

Hey thanks guys!.. cnic your fish is so full of life i love it! The only wacom tip i have is that I always keep it in mouse mode... or relative.. so it dosnt have the 4 corner registration... makes it so much easier for me. also I tend to start out light... gradually add darks...
Jriddim.... What? I am Wacom Noob. Help me out with that one. Mouse mode? 4 Corner reg.... why do you prefer?
Im glad to get the tip though, just not sure what Im looking for. Oh, J? Are you using Painter, or PS, or other??

Mouse mode is when it, well, behaves like a mouse. The movement is relative, as opposed to pen mode, where the four corners correspond to the corner of your screen, and the position is absolute.
Personally, I hate the mouse mode.
Jriddim
03-21-2007, 06:37 AM
thanks for explaining hewligan... I believe mouse mode is helpfull for when your using a smaller tablet... i like to hold it at angles and utalize certain areas...i tend to go off the surface when i use pen mode...

i'm a lefty too. why does this affect the size of the wacom tablet you use? just wondering haha - seems crazy to me.
I'm no lefty, but I think I know why... because at the smallest size the intuos has buttons just on the left side, above that it has buttons on both sides.
the graphire, does not have those buttons at all... so maybe it wouldn't matter.
Amen FDGB,
My thoughts exactly. I have already made great use of these buttons on my intuos, and without them, or if they were on the left only, I would be rather annoyed.
Ok, so I just checked my settings, and I have been using absolute positioning, or "pen" mode in my mapping settings. I will try the mouse mode out just for reference, but so far I have been very pleased with Pen mode.
Here are the screenshots with the explainations... for those that might still be confused.
.
Here is a sketch from yesterday..... No it is not me, just a face.
I will really try to make a commitment to this thread, and post often, if not once per day. I think that alone will help me get more use of my wacom, and improve my skillzzzzzz.

Well Cnic ... I don't have anything nearly close to what you have in just 2 days :D
I use my Intenuos3 6x8 quite a bit but I find it hard to sketch with. The way the pen touches the pad are just too slippery to me and my hand slides around when I just want to make a a good solid line. I'm left handed too.
Anyone have any tips on how to make this thing more freehand sketch friendly? I use Photoshop and Painter. Any other tips other than the basic white one? I can use it if I zoom way in and really take my time.
I used to be a cartoonist and though I love the tablet, I can still do way better with paper, pencil, and ink.
gee, I dont know. I havent really had to deal with any really fine super straight lines yet. I just got my wacom and I am still learning it. Maybe you could you the line tool for stuff like that...???
hmmm.. I guess I preffer the easy stroke across the Wacom. Maybe you could look for a different type of tip for the pen you have. ?? I would check with Wacom.

You've done some beautiful sketches there, especially being new to the tablet interface!
The nose on this one reminded me of the Gerald Scarfe art at the begining of the tv series "Yes Minister". He was the artist who did the early art work for Pink Floyd, like the album cover for the Wall.

I know what you mean about the pad being too slippery, I like the feel of pencil to paper, what I do sometimes. I put a thin piece of paper on top and it really helps. But I still generally sketch on paper and paint on the comp.

Cnic, thanks for starting this thread. I'd a good inspiration to keep that Wacom from gathering dust and hopefully expand my illustration portfolio.
I LOVE the style of illustration you're using. Would you be able to post some intermediate-stage screenshots? I'm interested in seeing how you're doing the smooth gradients of color. Do you start with flat areas of a base color and build up for highlights?
Also, do you do anything special with your brushes when painting in Photoshop? Do you use textures and what-not, or just straight-up colors and building up colors, etc.?
I bought an Inuos 3 4x6 for my widescreen monitor, but I haven't practiced with it enough lately. I find it hard to use for precise vector work, and haven't been doing much bitmap stuff lately. Once my portfolio site is complete, I plan on getting back into illustrating again, and will definitely post samples here.
I have to experiment with my Intuos and the different tips to figure out what they do.
I also find it very difficult to do work with the tablet on my desk because I have a hutch desk with a keyboard pull-out drawer, and when working in Photoshop, I like to use the key shortcuts a lot. I can't seem to comfortably fit a keyboard and tablet on my desk surface, and find it cumbersome.
Do I need a really large desk surface to make digital illustrating more functional?

He used to teach at St. Clair College, in Windsor, Ontario, Canada. Had him for a few years and he worked freelance on the side at that point, until he got the offer to work for Raven Soft. Seems like a sweet job, he loved video games too.

Of course, used to do my old comics with Wacom/Illy all the time, and I also did some cartooning for a freelance client's site recently. Wacom has a tutorial for pressure sensitive Illustrator inking/drawing on their site somewhere.

Hey "dog", seems wierd to say, Hey Wiener... haha.
Thanks for the great compliments! They are very encouraging. I dooooo in fact start with some base color and work it up to Highlights, then drop in the darker and lighter details. I will post some "in progress" shots on the next thing I come up with.
So far, (as I am still learning) I have pretty much been staying with the same brush, just changing size, opacity, and flow. I drop the opacity and flow down to blend more smoothly. It has worked out well thus far. I have tried using the smudge tool a couple of times... but not alot. The only time I used a different brush was for the stuble on that guys face. Wanted to get that speckled look.
So mostly just "straight up colors and building up colors. (I guess)
I am blessed with a pretty large desk area. And the Intuos that I have offers the additional buttons on the pad, so I havent had to use my Keybord much while drawing/painting.
Thanks again .... you little Wiener. Ha!

What is the difference between changing the flow of a brush and changing the opacity?
Opacity specifies the maximum amount of paint coverage applied by the brush.
Flow specifies how quickly paint is applied by the brush tool. Those are the Adobe definitions.
Now here is my explaination....
Open a new doc in photoshop with a white back. Using your wacom, or your mouse, draw two squares with a brush at 100% opacity, and 100% flow.... do not fill them in. I labled them box 1, and box 2, and arranged them number 1 above number 2.
Then change your brush size to.... 120. Change your opacity to 20% and your flow should be 100%. Using one continuous stroke, fill in box one. You will notice that you get a very clean, even fill.
No reverse the flow and opacity amounts and fill in box 2.... you will notice a big difference in the way that the boxes fill in.
This has come in handy when laying a base color(s)... I get a nice clean base, with out the variation of layered paint.
I dont know if that helped at all... but hopefully it did.
.
I haven't posted anything here for a while. I had a little extra time today, so I drew one up just for fun.
Enjoy.

also, what program are you using to do the fish?
Did you use the smudge/blur tool to get the tones looking smooth?
i've been to other sites and they state that using that particular tool is s**t
as they believe it to be cheating
as i said in my thread, i've only had this beast for a week so i don't know what is correct.
it's a tool, so why not use it, i mean it's not like i'm using a poxy filter or anything.
what dya think?
I don't use the smudge or smear or blur.... I don't really see why that would be considered cheating, but whatever.
I only use brushes, and adjust the opacity / flow. Lots of slow buildup... then I erase all the leftovers to get a sharper image. I've only just started with my wacom... the elvis "like" sad guy up there is about the 7th or 8th thing I've drawn with it so take my advice as a grain of salt.
Enjoy your wacom!
Hope to see you in the thread more often!

From what I gather, people recommend a Intuos? Dunno how its spelt. But a graphire is fine , which is what i got. It really depends what your using it for. If you want a career then, i'd say go for a bigger one - its alot better on your wrists, arms.. and stuff.
Anyway, a Wacom won't make you a better artist. It's important to understand traditional , basic techniques before.. There are a plenty of people who draw straight from wacom without scanning. But i reckon its not the best road to take espcially for a noob. Pencil/pen and paper first.
Agreed sierng.
I have an Intuos 3 9x12 and love it...... but I was drawing long before dropping some cash for my wacom.
My suggestion: Start using a sketchbook... a smaller one thats mobile. Take it everywhere with you and dont be ashamed to use it. In a month, re-evaluate.... have you used your sketchbook? Do you like using it? Can you see a potential need for this skill in your computer life???? ect. Then decide on the wacom, and wait one more month before buying it.
Also, dont just buy a wacom to design with.... if you think you will illustrate and have fun with it... then by all means buy one. If your just designing and think it would be a benefitial tool, get a new sweet mouse and keyboard and live a long, happy, productive designer life.
Hope this helps..... I love my wacom (Walter)... and would never regret buying it.

Hey cnic, do you get illustration work in addition to your design work? The illustrations you've shown are real impressive. I've recently just started a comic strip and am going to try using my 4 x 6 Intuos 3 to do the "inking" and probably even do some character designs.
I recently stumbled across a comic book illustrator's site who uses a Wacom with Illustrator to do all his work. He posts tutorials and tips on illustrating comics. I'm pretty sure he does all work paperless.

Hey THANKS Wiener. (I smile like a jr.high kid every time I get to type that.)
I really appreciate the compliment... and link you gave looks pretty cool, though I've only had time to skim over it so far.
I am not an illustrator, but I originally wanted to be one... I dont even know where to begin now. How does one go about becoming an illustrator??? I have looked around for some basic info on illustrating, but I guess I didn't find much... any help would be appreciated.
Might be fun to do a little on the side I guess....???
Anyway, Thanks again!

started playing around more with brushes and and the smudge tool. I definately want to play more with using the smudge tool to create some of those intermediate colors instead of getting a new one from the palette.
The smudge tool can be really handy, but watch it - when you're working with low strengths on large images, you can really start to make your processor work.
A couple of times, I've done something with the smudge tool, then just had to walk away for ten minutes or so, while the computer pretty much froze up. Never actually crashed on me, though - always seemed to get there in the end, but it can be a major pain.

If you love to draw, and you don't think you're good at it, then the answer's simple: keep on drawing. 90% of everything about drawing is just practice.
And you're probably better than you think. Most people are far too hard on your drawing skills.
Tom: I was going to say something about that thing you posted, but then I got interrupted when some friends arrived, and now I can't remember what I was going to say. No alcohol involved, sadly - I'm just easily distracted.
Whatever I had to say, I'm sure it was brilliant. Also, witty. I am nothing if not witty :D

my lines are all jaggedy and pixelated....any ideas what this is? Are there settings I can play with anywhere? Any ideas? Also...what programs are best to play in?
Gulp! ... Ummm I dont have any idea. Sounds like an issue with the tablet... I wouldn't trust it ;). I would say, try using Photoshop, Fireworks, download the free trial of Corel Painter X.

I did this one in photoshop. I scanned in a sketchbook sketch, and then painted it using only my wacom tablet and pen....I never use my mouse anymore!
This is a great thread, been a lot of fun looking at all the artwork created w/ only the wacom!

This has a great feel to it and Tom is right a ton of energy. The style reminds me of one I just can't seem to place. I should say this is a great thread, so much creativity, I have been considering investing in one of these things for awhile now. I am kind of an old school painter, you know the kind, brushes, paint and canvas but I would love to fool around with one of these and see what I can do even if it's just somehting for myself.
DesignVHL
07-19-2007, 04:40 PM
I'm an old school painter too. While in highschool I even took classes and studied under some fantastic artists, who have become quite well-known actually! We studied in the style of the old masters, it was wonderful and I've been wanting to revisit this past.
I barely have time to oil paint anymore and Painter X w/ my wacom tablet, while DEFINITELY NOT THE SAME, really did have an impact, and I was able to transfer my creative thoughts (and energy) onto my digital canvas. Been thinking about printing some of these works onto canvas too and sell as prints....seems be going well at local gallerys and shows...so there may be something to this. You would greatly benefit from Painter X - download the trial and give it a try! There is also a free program out there that is similar to Painter, but you don't have as much control as you do w/ Painter...its called ArtRage - http://www.ambientdesign.com/artrage.html the first version is free but the new one costs 20 bux apparently!
But from another hands on artists perspective, I would say go for the wacom if you can put some $ towards it! I have a 6x8 at work, and the largest one at home...and I find the 6x8 to work more than perfectly for my needs, and sometimes find the larger one a bit cumbersome ...i almost want a smaller one instead - more for when I get my Mac Book Pro so I can be more mobile...but yeah bottom line - it is SO WORTH IT!
Logo-Mechanix

I am definitely going to give the Wacom a try, thank s for the input, I have Corel Painter and I think that will do the trick but I'll give the trial version you mentioned a go it can't hurt.

Anyone have any specific custom settings they use on their wacoms??
Not much in the way of custom settings.... Not yet anyway. I've only had my Wacom for about 3 months or so... I think?? But I am open to suggestions.
Yeah, on the last drawing I posted... I tried to post an early unfinished copy... but im thinking I could have posted a couple more stages. There have been a few people in here asking for a look at the "process". Though I'm not sure I have much of a process at this point.

Well then I will share one that is a MUST IMHO!!! I have a custom setting for my left touchstrip - using this [ and ] you setup to create a function to change your brush sizes using custom key strokes ( i can run thru it if needed) when you scroll up and have this ] setup - it makes your brush size larger, and then down [ makes your brush size smaller! I can't live w/ out that one.....then while scrolling up or down, if you touch the alt key (on the tablet or keyboard), your brush goes from soft to hard...or vice versa! I use my other scroll for zooming (i think that is the default) but i think i may change that to pen opacity (have to figure out keystroke setup for that one)...so anyways give that one a shot...it'll feel so natural after a while to be able to change your brush size instantly while drawing! No need to use the brushes pallet (Except to change your brush to a different one)...
sierng
07-21-2007, 08:08 AM
Thats a great tip DesignVHL in regards from switching to soft to hard brush.
I have a question of my own to all. Lets say I have picture and start it off at a lower resolution to do things such as solid fills, fixing up lines etc. Then - bump up the resolution, as more details are added later. Would this, effect the final piece? I'm asking this because each stroke takes very long, and its really annoying.
DesignVHL
07-21-2007, 10:27 PM
I don't think that is a good idea....i always start off at the size I'll want it to print the largest. If you upscale it afterwards, its not going to look right based on my experience...if your doing really detailed large work, you may want to bump your RAM up...

Thanks everyone! These are definitely some of the funner projects I've been able to work on lately.
And, while I was thinking about this, I thought I'd go through some of my older stuff, and I found some projects I did in college, on my very first Wacom, an Intuos I (though of course it didn't have the I on it way back then). Here, take a look:
A summer concert series poster; I know, I know, Zapfino AND Impact... But come on, I was young! lol:
http://i112.photobucket.com/albums/n192/microswede/Misc/harmony7.jpg
The cover of a graphic novel I did for my Illustration class (we could choose a graphic novel or a movie title sequence, and I was the only one of 18 to tackle the novel... lol). The interior pages were all done with ink, watercolor and gouache, but the cover was all Photshop CS. As for the title, "My Name is Meat", the story was about my trip to Japan with a couple friends. My name, Nick, is pronounced Nikku in Japanese, but if you pronounce it Niku (less severe in the 'kk'), it means meat; so, basically, I was introducing myself to everyone we met as Meat. Anywho, here it is:
http://i112.photobucket.com/albums/n192/microswede/Misc/mnim-cover.jpg
And, lastly, my first ever project on my tablet. A poster for a game night that I think I literally did in half an hour or something crazy:
http://i112.photobucket.com/albums/n192/microswede/Misc/gamenight-poster.jpg
For those of you still in college, I strongly suggest trying to find a job at any of the offices on campus you can find. I was fortunate enough to work at both the Family Housing office and the Career Services office, simultaneously, while I was taking design full-time. When they pay you in pennies (or near enough), you usually get away with trying all kinds of stuff; my vice was trying to get in all the illustration I could.

These all look good. I need to get one for home use. My boss brought a beginner type in to work to use and all i have done is basically use it for masking and getting in to fine areas and some small touch ups that benefit from the pressure. One day, i will use it to draw some.
great inspiration.

I appreciate the comments, thank you.
Nice work Kat!
...what program did you use?
...
Just regular old PS cs2. Standard brushes (mostly just the round circle).

NICE glad to see another ArtRage user! I love that program! I'm debating whether I should just buy the whole thing already! Tough to decide....i kinda want Painter X! :) Anyone using that?
And John, wonderful artwork! I do see the circle brush being used! :)

I've never tried ArtRage, but I have tried Painter X. And I think it's just as slow, buggy and crashy as all the other versions of Painter I've tried. Painter's such an awesome idea, that I keep trying it, but they just never seem to fix the overwhelming problems it has. :(

I'm glad I started reading this thread, I was actually just looking around for a Wacom last week (mostly to get an idea of prices/models/etc.) and now I definitely decided I need to get myself one! :D

So glad I found this forum. I have had a Wacom for a while now and I use it on occasion, not as much as I should lately! But here is something that I did using it. I started with a paper sketch that I scanned in and colored using Photoshop & my wacom. http://fc03.deviantart.com/fs11/i/2006/175/2/6/Ben___WIP2_by_frchblndy.jpg

Thank you Red Kittie Kat!
I have more fantasy type work I've done with my Wacom also. I have just ordered some new nibs for it, I lost the extra ones that came with it and I would really like to try the felt nibs. I hear they are the smoothest on the drawing pad.

I'm looking to get the 9x12 Intuos 3 this summer. Is the larger size worth it?
I have the 6x8 and I find it works great. Much larger and it would be a desk hog and awkward. With the ability to zoom in while sketching details in photoshop you may find you don't need the big one. I think it really is a matter of personal preference though.
