It's good for your friends to know what you do. I just scored an easy money gig for an online music store that my friend works for as a programmer. They'll send me cd's every week, I just need to scan and crop the cd art and then upload it via their ftp site. It'll be an extra $500+ a week for about 3+ hours of work, plus free music! ;o)

Somedays it really pays to own a scanner and photoshop

Wow, sweet deal, you get to keep the CDs too?

How many cds a week? Could become a pain in the ass if you have to scan a lot of cds

Just curious as to how the legalities of that workflow works, in terms of scanning copyrighted album artwork. Do you have to obtain waivers from the record companies or how does that work?

Wow! They're having scans made of covers! You can usually find a digital copy of a cover online somewhere that would be suitable for an online music store. I won't tell.

Broacher, normally the retailer has lisence to promote the cd's in any unaltered form - same as if I took a book off the shelf and scanned it to sell on ebay. It is a valid representation of the work to be sold with no alterations. Not illegal at all.

It's not as if they are using someone esles album art to sell the neighborhood garage band's work.

Colonel - Great score on that job!

the company i'm doing this work for services only indie artists and small record labels and they take care of the legalities. I meet with their project manager sometime soon to finalize the details.

I get $15 per cd/insert/tray I scan, format and upload. I'd guess I could easily do 5 an hour if not more once I get in the groove of their process. The thing I need to nail down is if I'll have a quota each week etc

i don't know if I have to send the cd's back or not but I can't control if the cd accidentally gets ripped into iTunes and then stays in there if I like it ;o)

I had lunch with the guy today and the details are as follows.

1) They have a huge backlog so I can do as many or as little as I want per week.

2) A lot of the cds are audio books and bad indie artists

3) They'll ship or drop off and pick up all the cds and everything I need is either to be uploaded or downloaded from their ftp site.
