I need some help. I have designed a logo for a client. She is having it hotstamped. Right now it is 3 colors. I talked to the company doing the printing and he was telling me that the colors need to be 1/8" apart to prevent overlapping and they are running 65 lines per inch. What does this mean??!!?!?! How do I need to design it for this? I use all Adobe and I designed the logo in Illustrator.

What is this getting printed on?

when a printer tells you colors need to be 1/8" apart, that means each color plate can misregister by +/- 1/16". keeping them 1/8" apart will prevent colors from overlapping in the worst case scenario .

i don't know if cost is any issue for now or the future, but you may want to consider cold stamping instead of hot stamping. Cold stamping doesn't require an expensive die charge and also doesn't hold you to a specific size if you want to use it on other things... the only problem with cold stamping is the edges of the stamping are not as crisp as it would be for hot stamping and text smaller than 6pt tends to close up.
