These are just comps for an in-class critique shot with my P.O.S. camera - using my partner's EOS 30d for the finals, so they will be much nicer, particularly the lighting in the SMEAR photograph.

The assignment was to generate 50 ways of typing without a computer, document 12 of them, and then refine those 12 into 9 solid concepts.

Other ideas we'll be shooting: cups in a fence spelling out "cups in a fence," lighter fluid and sticks spelling "flame," soldered wire sculpture spelling "weld," alphabet cereal spelling "breakfast," and so forth. Fun assignment.

the best part about it is that it's being taught by peter megert, who studied under josef albers and other bahaus legends.

Oooh, you lucky bugger! My homework at uni sucked ass. It was just piles of equations. I wish I could go back to school now and spend my evenings rubbing face cream on bathroom mirrors! Sod it, I might just go and rub some moisturiser on our bathroom mirror right now for the hell of it.

Wow, what a great project! There are so many options with this! I wish I would've had projects like this...would've made me think about the process and possibilities a bit more...script fonts with yarn, block typefaces with blocks...cool! have fun with that!

Some of these turned out absolutely amazing. The "LEAD" one with random type slugs is definitely the winner.

With that said, the Canon 30D is a total winner.

I wonder if I could form my three cats into the word "cat". That would be a neat shot! :D

Haha we had to generate 50 ideas but only document 12 of them :o

We're going to reshoot a few that need refinement...I'll post them as we finish them.

Here's a reshoot of sexy with a wine bottle in the background this time. I made my girlfriend buy "stripper panties" to lay across the wine bottle, but they didn't read well, so we just left the wine bottle in. But at least the project yielded some hot new underwear for my girlfriend to wear!

You might be able to, but I think they would probably hate you for the rest of their lives. Be sure to use your most flexible youthful cat for the "a" though!

YEah, telling cats what to do always works. You might have to use a nail gun and some towels.

I second the motion! This I want to see! I don't have enough children to spell out "pain in the ass"

This sounds like a group project for GDFer parents to me. :D

How cool is that? Love the Lead one myself, but that's the printer in me.

did you try using a typewriter? i think that's what i would do, but i'm always looking for the shortest distance between two points.

Stunning work. Hope you document it into a book or a exhibition.

Stuff like this is so refeshing to see - type outside of computers. It also exercises those tired computer ridden brains!

Morea - I suppose a Monday deadilne is fine, although I expect to see this deadline extension reflected in your final invoice.

Buda, these are being documented in what OSU calls a "Final Course Documentation..." each student puts one together at the end of every studio course that highlights the work throughout the quarter with brief explanations and reflections. Nothing too fancy - I think I'm doing an 11x11 wire bound booklet this time around. Thanks for the compliment :)

did you try using a typewriter?

Yeah - the problem is that we are in a class of 17 students, so the typewriter was talked about thouroughly. I think 3 people are doing "Ransom" which is why my partner and I made the decision to write out "cliche" instead. Kind of a big middle finger to the people who are repeating generic ideas. Same goes for the "flame" idea we were going to spell with sticks and lighter fluid.

This is also the reason we had to nix the "alphabet soup" idea, although we searched for alphabits cereal - but we can't find it anywhere around here haha...how weird.

Alphabet soup is hard to find. I can only ever find the canned variety, but not the dried pasta shapes themselves. Are they out of fashion?

The cliche idea is great. I used to do that a lot in my uni work. I feel a bit mean belittling everyone else's ideas with my own, but serves them right for not thinking outside the square!

You should explore something other than wirebinding for this. Won't most people do wirebinding? Visit your art store, they'll have all sorts of hinges and clips. You could even incorporate letters into the binding! Oh the possibilities!

1ooScreamingTrees

Alphabet soup is all over the place - it's the cereal we can't find!

I may look into other binding options - a few people have done it in the previous quarters with hinges, bolts, etc., and it comes off as forced rather than integral to the design.

Oops! I wasn't paying proper attention. Never heard of or seen alphabet cereal...What font is it in? :D

*Edit. I found them. There's heaps of old designs for these. I guess they have been around for a long time?

I'm technically a senior standing but it's the fourth quarter of design classes. I had to take care of the "general education curriculum" first...nothing but design from here on out.

We did the cups at the tennis court in my apartment complex - we got a few weird looks haha.
