I am a graphic design student. I am interested in getting my hands on as many books as possible that will enhance my understading of how to better utilize type in my design. Although I have done well in my Type classes, I find that it is still a struggle for me. Any suggestions are welcome; I am here to learn.

Thanks

Make sure The Elements of Typographic Style by Rober Bringhurst is one of them. It is positively seminal!

Here's two books on typography that I'm finding myself looking at lately. I also have two of the other books previsouly mentioned.

Thinking with Type by Ellen Lupton
InDesign Type by Nigel French (actually a good resource, specifically about type)

Typography Workbook by Timothy Samara isn't bad too.

I agree with the Bringhurst "The Elements of Typographic Style". Positively essential, and a must for your library. You'll get historical perspective, as well as stylistic and aesthetic. Plus, the prose is just beautiful to read (Bringhurst has a poetry background).

Another one for the personal library: "The Complete Manual of Typography" by James Felici (Adobe Press).

And for thoery: "Typography: Macro + Micro Aesthetics" by Willi Kunz (Niggli Publishers).

Enjoy.

The Elements of Typographic Style by Rober Bringhurst

I know this was mentioned above. BUT it is such a good book I had to reiterate. I learned so much (maybe too much) about typography from this one book. I bought a used copy from amazon...but it definately would have been worth the full price.
