I recently applied to the New England Institute of Art for the bachelor's in Graphic Design and I was accepted. No doubt, it has always been something I want to learn, but what I want to do with my life...I dont know. I've been second guessing myself as of late. I want to do so many things that I'm having a hard time with what I want to do for a career. I don't want to waste money in something that may end up being a hobby for me. I didn't do any paper work for financial aid or anything..I know it's not too late to change my major but how does that make me look to the school? I'm starting to think I should minor in design instead and having my main focus be photography like I originally intended years ago. Gah!

I know this is something I have to figure out of my own..and I hope I will soon...just venting makes me feel better.

My head hurts.

Peace out!

Don't worry about what you look like to the school. If you're really unsure, see how you go. Find out if you can change your major later in your course.

answer this> Why do you want to be in the design field?

Money?
Artistic development?

Graphic design for the most part is a service industry with little artistic freedom. It's more about function and communication.

Photography actually has more money and freedom than design. You can also do both. As most designers will tell you, more and more positions are multifacited.

I NEED artistic freedom, and after doing reseach I'm starting to see there isn't much of it at all. I would love to do both, but time and money is always a factor. I know I'm still young and have plenty of time to do it. Take one step at a time I guess.

Almost everyone I know changed majors, many multiple times. No one cares, except at some point financial aid tells you to quit messing around and get a degree with your 200 credits already.

Something to think about, I'm an artist. I paint, draw, sculpt, sew, and make jewelry as well as being a published writer. For a profession, I've done office manager, book keeper, tech support, and now I'm in graphic design.

I still have all the artistic freedom at home and I keep that seperate. When a put forthe the effort I can still make a good side income from that as well.

What I think about is what can I do to make money in a job that enables me to pursue my passion in art.

On the side you can still do your art and photography and work a mainline job that might be Studio photography or Graphic Design. Just as long as you realize that there's not many people out there that make money and truely fullfills their dream job.

Maybe you can think of being an Illustrator. Which can lead to a little more artistic freedom than others, but clients still make the rules.

I had exactly the same deliberation when I was at art school. In the end I went with graphic design because I missed being able to use a wide range of media to create work as opposed to just photography and I figured I could learn photography later more easily than graphic design, as a night class or something. Now i completely regret that decision. There is little chance when in the industry for real to have the time and artistic freedom to do anything by hand or use painting etc in designs and to get really good at photography requires a lot of practice, so I wish I had stuck with photography. I recently got back into it again and am frustrated at my limited ability in the field, as the opportunity for artistic creativity within it is vast and is more instant than with design. You can make good money from photography too and can have a more interesting career - from fashion, magazine, reportage photography to working for a music mag or paper, getting into gigs for free, or even portraiture if you had to do it, and you're not stuck staring at a computer screen all day. I think it would be more interesting than design. Also, it depends on how technically minded you are - there is such an enormous amount of technical knowledge you have to know about in design, from keeping up to date with the software to tackling output problems before the pretty designs on screen look the same on paper - plus these days everyone expects designers to be able to do it all - there's a lot of web design expected so there's programming involved there. yawn! I'd rather be travelling around with my camera taking spontaneous shots or setting up shots any day! But it all depends on what you think will make you more happy. Good luck making your decision!

Schools don't care how often you change majors. Follow your dreams.
