I have both DW MX and DW MX2004. Which one is "version 8"? And why is it sometimes called DW 8 and other times called MX? I'm confused.

Dreamweaver MX came before MX 2004, then came Dreamweaver 8. Next up is CS3.
That's where I was confused... First I had MX, then we bought MX2004. But I have "8" on my laptop and I'm trying to figure out where it came from!!! Obviously not the MX2004 install disk, but it's also not on the CS2 suite (which I have CS1 and then now CS2). I *know* we didn't buy Dreamweaver on its own. It would have been purchased as a bundle, suite, or something. So what did 8 come packaged with?

I think it came bundled as part of Macromedia Studio 8, right before it became part of the Adobe suite.
Studio 8. Excellent!!!!!!!!!!! Now I gotta figure out where my damn cd's are....... Thanks guys!
