Good news! I accepted a new job today, and start on Monday.
This is great news for me financially, but I feel somewhat like I failed too.
Let me explain. I've spent the past 12 years working as part of an in-house design team that was built around me. After only a few months working there, I was able to expand my department by 1. So I called a good friend from college and he took the job. We worked together until the office was closed in August 2006. Damn corporate realignment! So I had 12 weeks severance and 6 months unemployment to survive with.
Now, here's where I got lazy. I didn't want to rush back out and start working right away. I felt that I had earned the right to take some time off. Unfortunately, that time came and went and I had no employment. I did have a few interviews, but obviously didn't get the jobs.
I've had a handful of freelance jobs, but nothing to count on as far as steady income. I really wanted to turn my part-time freelance into a full-time business. I never knew how hard it is to obtain consistant work. I do now!
Our financial situation started to grow. The bills were getting paid, but our savings account is starting to drain. The stress between my wife and me was getting tough to handle. Leave it to a woman to get things done. My wife took my resume, which was prepared by a professional outplacement company, and reworded it to her liking. I posted it on Monster on Tuesday. Late Wednesday afternoon I receive a phone call from a recruiter. Followed up by more calls on Thursday confirming an interview for today.
So I went to the interview at 10:00, met with the Director of Marketing and the Chief Operating Officer. I did the dog and pony show and took their personality tests, by 12:30 today I accepted an offer. I start on Monday.
Here's the kicker, I'm walking back into my house after the interview. I'm on the phone with the recruitment company telling them about my interview, etc. and my call waiting starts to beep.
I check the voicemail and it's another recruiter calling about another position.
Don't get me wrong. I'm extremely excited about the job. I just feel like a failure in my own business, but who knows, maybe I'll still get there.
The bottom line is this . . . bill need to be paid and this company is willing to pay them.
Thanks for reading.
