If Google really cared about the Earth, they'd change their home page to black (http://www.notelay.com/articles/internet/black_google_saves_energy/). ;)
Indeed... The black text on white background thing is a carry-over from print, where it saves on ink, but in the world of light, it has the opposite effect.
Remember old pre-GUI computer systems, that we had to type on (DOS, Apple IIe, Commodore, etc.)? You notice that all the operating systems were black screen with light grey lettering? Same reason we type letters on white paper.

Never thought about the black/white thing on a screen vs energy consumption. It might save your eyes too.
