Ugh. My sinuses have been killing me all weekend. I actually stayed home from work yesterday because of my allergies, which makes this only the second time I've called in sick in two years. My voice sounds like I've spent the last twenty years smoking.
Everything is in bloom now, and it's pretty, but it's killing me.
At least I feel a little better today.
hack-hack-COUGH! sniffle.

I have another interview tomorrow, so I need to be halfway coherent for at least a couple of hours. Hacking up a lung during an interview is usually frowned upon...

I'm not sure if I am battling allergies (which I never had as a kid, but they seem to get worse every year lately) or a cold. Here's what I'm doing, maybe it will help:
Claritin (the store-brand knockoff)
herbal tea
drink lots of water (orange juice is also good because of the vitamin C)
echinacea
if it's a cold:
- limit milk products and refined sugars
- increase garlic intake to boost immune system
- take cold medicine only if you need to, it is a common belief that they may prolong the cold.
- gargle with salt water to soothe sore throat pain
- try to keep your hands away from your face and be sure to wash them frequently
- zinc, echinacea and vitamin C supplements / cough drops can shorten colds

As a man who has terrible allergies that didnt start until i was 15 (now 26) I know what your going thorugh. Mine got so bag I was popping 4 bendryl and a few sinutab per day.
Found that Nasonex (nostal spray) works great as do the allergy shots that im now on once a week. Still get plugged up and runny but I usually pop a bendryl and im good to go.
Staying away from allergens is your best bet, but when your allergie to trees and grass like i am, thats almost impossible unless you want to live in a bubble

I'm sorta lucky, never have had allergy issues and I lived in Sonoma County, which is considered to have some of the highest levels of pollen in the country.
The trade off is I have poor sinus's and if I get a cold it almost always develops into an infection and also eating a lot of cheese or drinking a lot of alcohol really screws me up.

Try not to take zinc and C at the same time, they kinda cancel each other out.

My sinuses are killing me, too. My car has a lovely green pollen cast on it and my head feels like it's gonna explode. I think I'm gonna go raid the benadryl.

Sorry, but glad to hear that some of the rest of you are suffering along with me. I look like I've been crying all day because my eyes are a mess from alergies. Plus baby number two got a bit overly excited yesterday and whopped me in the face with a toy car, so I have a nice bruise around my right eye. My husband is refusing to be seen in public with me until I don't look like a battered wife any more!

My son slammed a door on my head once. I got a huge shiner. I swear I saw stars! I asked him why he did that and his response was that he thought I was his sister!!

I was going to suggest drugs too. When I ever get allergies, I take 1 pill and that is me sorted for that whole season. It could just be a placebo effect though.

Not in his daddy's mind! He got himself into a mess of trouble over it! It took that shiner over a month to go away.
The weird thing is that people wouldn't look at me or ask me about it.

You should have printed up a tshirt to wear that month that said "Wanna fight?" Depending on how bad this black eye gets I might do it!

Wow, I remember the one time I had a black eye. I'd walked into a very clear glass door, with sunglasses on, and the shiner lasted for a week.
Unfortunately, at the time I was taking the trolley home, this was in October, so by the time I would get on the trolley it was way too late to be wearing sunglasses to cover it up.
I got some very indirect and uncomfortable looks. With the exception of this group of obnoxious kids, one of whom sat next to me and asked me what I'd done that my man had beat me so hard.
Yuck.

I'm allergic to pollen from birch (or how you write it). It's coming pretty soon I guess, but due to the bad weather it has not hit me yet.

I'm allergic to dust, weed-grass-and-tree pollen, mold, cats, and cashews. Boy-o-boy, allergies are ever so much fun.
I've tried claritin and zyrtec - they work OK but they're not 100% for me. Most of the time I just suck it up and deal with it - except for cats and cashews, I avoid 'em like the plague. As far as pollen and hayfever goes, there's usually only a handful of days each year that are bad enough to put me out of commission. I try to take as few pills as possible - that which doesn't kill you makes you stronger strategy - seems to have worked a bit. I used to have really bad allergies - but it could be because I'm in my prime now.

I used to have bad allergy problems in conjunction with bad asthma. My biggest problems were dust and dust mites, but had problems with your usual ragweed and pollen in addition. In the last 7 years or so, my allergy problems (as well as my asthma) have been next to nil. I know you can outgrow childhood asthma, but I didn't know about the allergies. I'm not complaining though. :D

Well, I'm in hell right now. The central air in my house has gone out. Not a good thing in Louisiana. Lucky for us, it's under warranty. But it is so freaking hot in here right now that I can't even eat. The repairman was supposed to have called by yesterday but didn't. He should be calling today now that I've unleashed the wrath of cornfed onto the warranty people. Talk about a sinus headache.

I'm mostly feeling better today. I still sound a little nasally, and I have the occasional cough, but I don't feel like I want to die today.
I don't know what hit me so hard this year, and I don't know why some years I barely have a problem, while other years I get my butt kicked by allergies.
I tried taking some meds over the weekend (some antihistimines), but they had only minimal effect. At least I think the worst is over (or so I'm hoping).

After what I recall, Zyrtec works pretty OK against hangovers aswell.

I've never heard that! Though I do have a (male) friend who swears by Midol (a PMS medication) for curing a hangover...

Doesn't really matter if the pills actually work or not, as long as you feel better. :D

Zyrtec is what I took for my hay fever. I take 1 pill about every 4 months and it does the trick.
