What does live copy mean? I have searched every design dictionary available, but can find nothing!

Copy that's resides in the printable area, that is to say, the "live area."

This area is the safety margin that ensures the copy won't accidentally be cut off after the pages are printed and trimmed.

I think it has to do with cloning.:D

Sorry, I really have nothing and am too lazy to goggle it myself.

My first thought was the actual body copy that would be used in the final product - not filler text like lorem ipsum, etc.

"Live Copy" is a term that I don't really hear. It sounds to me like someone decided for whatever reason to condense "live area" to just "live" and toss the copy in there to denote it's placement. And since it's technically not an industry term (to my knowledge anyway, and I've been doing this for years) it's not likely to turn up in an industry text or glossary or something.

For example, I know there are background copy that bleeds off of a page for typographic design purposes, and of course, the copyright safety area has it's own dimensions. But the way you describe it Morea, that's equally a plausible explanation as well. Maybe the OP should just ask whoever he/she heard it from to explain it just to be sure.

Actually, I have seen it ALL over!! In adobe doc's, in documents from other designers, etc. etc. That is why I asked here, because I already tried to google it, etc. So...I think it is an industry term now.

Hm, not that I'm aware of, and now I know why. Apparently it's originally a web design term.

A quick Google search led me to this site: (http://www.spiderline.com/help/idx/6/019/article/What_is_the_difference_between_my_Working_Copy_and _Live_Design.html)

The Live Copy is the design in production. It is what your visitors see when they search on your web site.

After perusing a couple of pages of google results I found it being used in 3 different ways. There was one that was describing the live print area as discussed already. Another was describing the latest copy (this one was about proof reading) and a couple were referring to a live webpage.

Use it in a sentence? Half the references I found seems to point to copy in the safety area as SeaPony auggested. The other half suggested it referred to the available to the world copy something on the web.
