Sharmi, my cool lop bunny passed away last night. A combination of old age, cold weather and a possible chest infection. She was fine yesterday morning, playful even, but after work she was limp. We took her to the vet right away who confirmed that rabbits instinctively hide their sickness because they are prey. If they show weakness in the wild, they risk being eaten. Vet said that she might not make it through the night but gave her some medication anyway.

We took her home and kept her warm. About an hour later she was moving and making sounds like a whimpering puppy - bunnies don't make noise in general. My boyfriend picked her up and she died in his arms. We buried her in the garden with some hay and a slice of apple (her favourite).

Sweet bunny we're going to miss you. I hope that you had a happy retirement with us.

My wife lost her bird (cockatiel (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cockatiel)), she remembered it being caught (by her uncle) when my wife was about 8. He lived pretty long (20yrs).

Losing a pet sucks..

I am sorry for your loss Buda. :(

Sorry to hear about Sharmi Buda :(

Hopefully she is balancing waffles with Oolong in rabbit nirvana.

It's not many rabbits that are mourned across the world!

How's little kitty coping with the loss?

No kidding, as soon as I saw the title of this thread I thought oh no. I really feel bad about this. I almost felt like I knew her from all the stories of her exploits. :(

The Rainbow Bridge
(Author unknown)

Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.

When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.

All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor. Those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by. The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.

They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent. His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.

You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.

Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together.

Morea, that Rainbow Bridge thing is so sweet. Made my eyes water - not so good since I'm at work, but thanks. I'm going to send it to my bf. He's taken it quite hard.

Eeek! I'm gonna start crying at work. Garrr!
