Homework question?
check out old circus posters or any vintage poster for that matter. Most were illustrated with the illustration being the design.

Yes. When? Lots of times. Example? It's a tattoo, and well... you'd have to be here to see it.
Actually, you'd have to be here on your knees (but that's another story).

pretty much anytime an illustration is used in a layout, it's graphic design. which means most any layout of a banner, magazine article, business collatoral, etc... with an illustration is your example.
(WHat is up with the illustration vs. graphic design discussions this weekend?)

When an illustration fulfills the goals of graphic design it is a graphic design, when it does not fulfill those principles and goals it isn't.
When an illustration is not a graphic design it may not be "just art" either such as technical illustration. <<Disclaimer; I do a great deal of technical illustration and am not trying to belittle it in any way by saying it is not art. I have a degree in art and know that good technical illustration takes skill, but I do not consider it "art" in the classic sense.>>

Oxygen and hydrogen are gases at room temperature. Therefore water (H20) is a gas at room temperature.
