I've got a Quark file I am trying to add barcodes to. When I open the file, the barcodes I've pasted from last year's version (which worked fine) show up as one character per line (the font I'm using is called AbriBarcode39). If I view the characters in another font, say Arial, they're just fine. no spaces or carriage returns between characters. I've done all the obvious, (brought the text box to front, changed sizes, etc...). I've also given the file to someone on another computer and it's worked just fine for them. I've disabled, re-abled, uninstalled, re-installed, installed other versions.... I don't know what else to do. The only variable from last year is this computer. I've got the same version of quark running, but a new computer.

Does anyone have any ideas? I'm totally lost and it's driving me crazy.

For trouble shooting purposes, try changing the font size. Click the drop down "font size" menu and try one of those.

Tried going all the way down to 7 and all the way up to 48. Still no luck.

What platform and os is the new computer and what was the old computer?
What font utility program are you using? What version of Quark?

The old computer's OS was Panther, so is the new computer . I'm using Suitcase Fusion (just downloaded today), and the Quark version is 6.0. I know the old computer used Suitcase to manage fonts, and the Quark version was the same.

Fusion is a good font program but Quark can be a pain. Try this---turn the font off in Fusion and close Quark and drop the font itself into the font folder---open your hardrive folder, find the library folder, open it and find the font folder and drop that font there. Open Quark and see what you get.

Are you on a Mac or a PC? And if on a Mac, is it an Intel Mac or pre-Intel Mac?

I had some issues with certain fonts when switching to Intel Mac, and ended up using Linotype Font Explorer instead.

It seems the new computer has panther loaded. It could be a Intel but I would think Panther may not work well with it or not as good as tiger. The drop the font in the font folder is a quick fix but only tempory.

Doh, I completely glazed over the part about Panther being loaded. My bad. :o

I'm late to this. You've probably resolved it, but, some options if you haven't.
-download and run Font Finagler
-load the offending font Temporarily in Fusion. [File>Add Temporarily}. This has sometimes worked for me. If you restart Fusion they'll be gone, so you'll need to re-add.
-download and run the cleaning/maintenance utilities in Linotype Font Explorer. Free font manager~but the Full Monty. Cleaning utilities are under Tools Menu.

-try using Font Explorer instead of Fusion. [Make sure only one of them is open at any one time].

Damn, it's f@#~*ing Quack. If you do use FEX with Quack, you'll need to do this:

1. Open FontExplorer X
2. From the Menu Bar, choose FontExplorer X > Preferences
3. Click on the Advanced icon
4. Uncheck "<em>Deactivate all fonts which have been activated during the active session on quit</em>"
5. Activate all desired fonts
6. Quit FontExplorer
7. Open FontExplorer X
8. Open Quark

May take you a minute, but hey, if it works!...

Oddly enough, I find that LFEX plays nicer with Quark 6.5 if the Quark
extension is turned off. Anyone else seen this?

Yep. Some people have documented that. In my experience, it didn't seem to make any diff. Will have to check at work tomorrow to see whether it's on or off. Not to say it may make a diff...that's Quack and fonts for ya. The routine above did make the difference on my system, though...

You sure it wasn't some sort of planetary alignment over your Mac? :D

Yep. Sometimes I could almost believe the planetary alignment thing. BTW, I've got that checked on. Got a feeling that quirky thing may have ben resolved with a downloadable FEX update about 3 months ago.

I'll keep mine off then. I have no idea why it works, but apathy is getting the
better of me at the moment. I only use Quark once a month. I'll keep in mind
to turn it back on if I have problems when the planets move along though :D
