According to snopes.com, a child who put hand sanitizer on and then licked her hands had to be rushed to the hospital with alcohol poisoning.

The sanitizer is 62% alcohol or 120 proof!

We produce a lot of Alcohol based hand sanitizer here where I work and it never occured to me I could drink it at lunch. Let's see lemon scented or citrus basil? Decisions decisions. That does go a long way in explaining all the winos hanging out in an industrial park though...

I'm sure that's what it is. It'll kill you liver a bit.

no, read the link in snopes.

Not that I would recommend drinking that, either.

I know our alcohol hand sanitizers are made with Ethanol (Ethal Alcohol) which is the kind you drink.

I always thought it was isopropyl alcohol, too. Thanks for the link. We generally use regular soap and water but my sister in law is always coating her kid with that stuff. I sent her a link. I think that kids need these little germs they run into daily. It boosts their immune systems to fight off the little stuff. Then when the big stuff comes along they're armed and ready. So, we rarely use the sanitizer for that reason.

Kinda like the kitchen counter cleaners that kill 99% of germs. It's the superstrong 1% that gets left behind to reproduce more superstrong germs that's causing the problem.

We're just filth wizards here. The kids must have kick ass immune systems by now :D I'm too busy trying to stop the 15 month old from eating snails and sand from the yard to antibac anything!

The exact same reason why most antibiotic medications don't work nearly as well as they used to. Not to mention that most people don't follow the doctor's instructions and take all the medication prescribed and not quit once they feel better. If you do that, you're not killing everything in your system and leaving behind the more resistant bacteria that will be harder to kill.

I also agree with cornfed that sterilizing your whole environment doesn't give your immune system a chance to "train" itself to fend off germs. You leave yourself more open to a really bad illness because of a germ that would make someone else only mildly sick.

I feel for you Frankster. Just the other day my four year old was describing the the relationship between the consistency of boogers and how it effects the taste of them. It was truly disguisting. Apparently she prefers the gooey ones. How gross is that?! So hand sanitizer is the least of my worries right now. I looked out the window the other day and she was pretending to be a dog by laying on all fours and licking the water from a mud puddle. We need every germ fighter we can muster up in her little body.

I dont think you can use "safe" and "everclear" in the same sentence.

If you are drinking everclear though, mix it with Tang and make sure it stays cold. Add a splash of grenedine if desired. Its the drink the astronauts should have drank.
