Preface: I hate those days/weeeks/months where everything is stacked up against you.
So, I got fired from my job for an office prank that got labelled as "sabotage" ( I moved a coworkers OSX dock to the left and hid it) I was planning on quitting soon, and they were about to outsource my job so I'm not that sad, just wasn't quite prepared.

Now: So I wanted to finally start coding my grand online portfolio plan. One of those "the last re-design" ideas. And then I'm surfing the net and come across a website nearly identical to my vision: sharpideas.com

Grrrr.
It's hard to get motivated on my own project now without thinking, was that my idea or am I just ripping off their idea. Fortunately I have about 30 pages of sketches and some of the code started though.

wow, I can't believe you got fired for that! Maybe someday I'll share my practical joke story that is WAAAYYY worse than that, and I didn't even get fired!

Oh, I almost forgot, I also took a screenshot of their desktop beforehand and hid their icons, so she probably spent an hour wondering why nothing opened when she clicked on the dock, or desktop icons. OMG. "Supposedly" it also took IT an hour and a half to figure out how to fix it. Yah right, if that's the case they really need a whole new IT department.

Sounds like you're better off out of there, if that's their attitude about something as innocent as a prank.

Your bosses need to lighten up. My manager would've thought that was a hoot. Then again, my bosses aren't like most bosses...

Your IT department have never seen that prank? Geez...

A position just my be opening at my company in the next few weeks with absolutely no room for advancement, immature management and a complete lack of communication. On the bright side, the chick who would train you is pretty freakin awesome ;)

actually that site idea had been used a few times before. I've seen 6 or 7 sites that use that technique (shapes, photos, bugs, cameras). And I probably have a few bookmarked in my neverending mess-of-bookmarks.

I wouldn't totally ditch the idea, just make it your own.

Pranks that mess with production are not pranks.
They are funny in school but not in the workplace. I don't know as I'd have someone fired who did it (the first thing we were taught in Mac tech school was how to check for pranks and they even gave us a whole disk of them to 'play' with) but for someone not tech savvy it is a very scary feeling not to be able to use your computer to do your WORK. Most regular IT guys don't know how to handle Macs.
Sorry you got fired but maybe think next time about what your little prank may do to the work flow.

I'm all for fun (like taking the wheels off someone's office chair) but not when it messes with my work schedule.
It's always fun until someone loses an eye.
So much for his reference and unemployment bennies...
Hope it was worth the laugh.

I understand about the seriousness of harmful pranks, and about losing time, but when I have watched my own supervisor do the same thing to others, it kind of sets a precedent for what is acceptable. Also it's not something that should impede work for more than 30 seconds. Especially for IT!
About my unemployment and references:
1: My supervisor defied company orders and said he would still be a reference because he doesn't agree with them.
2: I wasn't counting on them to be a reference because I wasn't going to give 2 weeks notice after they gave me a 1% annual raise after commending my performance.
3: I am still getting unemployement out of the deal.
Most of all I think the point is that they were looking for a reason to get rid of me since they are outsourcing.

*pole* about the job.

That screen-shot is good, and quick and easy to execute too.

*Sorry*.
