i have separated custom fonts into an alternative folder so that my photoshop will not lag and load all the fonts when it runs. if i were to use a custom font, how would i load it into PS? or do i have to move it back to the default font folder to use it?

Get a font manager like Extensis' (http://www.extensis.com/) Suitcase.

Or the free Linotype Font Explorer (http://www.linotype.com/fontexplorerX) if you're on a Mac or want to take a chance with the new PC version that still has some kinks in it.

not sure if anyone else has it but i dont think it works properly. when i select the font i want to use and load it, it appears in PS. but when i click unload and then restart PS... the font is still there.

Font Thing's pretty old, and it only ever supported TrueType fonts. I'm not surprised you had problems with it.
Didn't know Linotype had gotten around to releasing FontExplorerX for Windows - still, that's a beta, and some of those bugs sound pretty bad.
Still, hopefully Suitcase won't be the only decent font manager on Windows much longer :D (And by decent, I really mean just about acceptable. I never thought the Windows version of Suitcase was actually good...)
The other approach is to go to your fonts control panel and do File->Install New Font, and at the bottom of the dialogue that pops up uncheck "Copy fonts to font folder." That way, any fonts you install will only be installed until your nect reboot.
Not nearly as good as an actual font manager, but it does come in handy.

my fonts are kinda screwy now... some of my custom font type "names" appear in the drop down but they're not supposed to be b/c they aren't activated and can't even be used. how do i get rid of this?

There never has been a decent free font manager for Windows. ATM was terrible, and Font Thing was somewhat limited. If the Windows port of Font Explorer X is good - and it probably will be - then that will be the first decent font manager for Windows.
If you can afford it, you should probably go with Suitcase. If you can't, then the Font Explorer X beta that Urst mentioned above is by far your best option.

Oh, I forgot, 30 day trial version of Suitcase for Windows:
http://www.extensis.com/en/products/font_management/product_trials.jsp?id=1055
Even if you decide not to buy it, it will show you what to look for in a font manager.

Well, if you're lucky, in another 30 days, maybe FontExplorer X will be out of beta and will solve your problems :D
