web 2.0 stripey backgrounds

I’ve spent ages trying to find a way of producing cool ‘web 2.0’ backgrounds without having to buy any new, expensive software and finally I’ve discovered a simple technique:

Step 1

Resize the background to the size you think it best, I went for about 1200px wide and 1000px high.

Click the gradient tool and drag to however you want your gradient to look.

Step 2

Create a new layer called stripes or something like that.

Click the fill button and select ‘fill: backwards diagonal’ then simple fill the whole new layer with stripes

Double click on the layer ‘Stripes’ and set opacity to 17 this will give you a nice stripy background, save this as a .png file and away you go!

thats basically it, i decided to make this tutorial because i cant afford any expensive software like photoshop and searched for ages to find a tutorial like this, only to realise just how easy it is using paint.net

have a look at an example here (http://aesthetic-design.co.uk/tutorial/tutorial1.html)

Here's a thread from a while back that shows a visual tut on creating diagonal lines.
