Any suggestions on what software would allow me to apply a 2d image to an existing 3d image? For example.. I want to place a product label design onto a photo of a can.

I don't know any program that specifically does that, but you could try using the warp tool in photoshop.

It depends on your budget - google sketch up - free, but not photo quality
3d studio max or Maya - very expensive but photoquality.
There are loads of programs out there, just google '3d programs', NB it can be a big investment especially if you are just creating one image, and you will need to create the object inside the programme before wrapping the image.

You can even do it in Illustrator if you are VERY patient with the interface...
Image mapping - check help.

Almost any 3d software will do that.
What 3d app are you using btw?

Ah, I misread the post. If you are going onto a photo of a can, use Photoshop like Tom said.

I honestly dont know why you would want to put a product label design, on a "photo can".

I personally would use 3D Studio Max, because you just have to create the "can" shape (half of the can), then revolve the can shape, apply a metalic color material to the can, create a shape, i'd create a rectangle slightly offset from the size of your product label image. Do save the product label design with a transparent background. Create a material using the image of the product label. You can "wrap" the shape around the can, then apply the product label to the label shape. Add your lighting (this is most important), that should take care of it.

make the can in illy and make it 3d then map the image to it. use to do it all teh time. google search for a tutorial on it and you will have your answer. If it was a high quality job i would use 3ds max like navian said. still shouldn't take more then 15 minutes to get up and going if you know what you are doing. that sort of basic stuff is simple in 3ds max.

Depending on what you plan to do with the file would probably help you decide what software you want to use..ultimately though you can use photoshop...or a 3D rendering program...by importing in what you need to map.....

You could also import the 3D image into PS and try a displacement map technique - or the warping tool...CS3 may have some new advanced tools for all this.
