Ok so, I really need to get my portfolio site up and running on its own domain name and off the server space at the college I just graduated from. Here is where the flood of questions begin and start to feel overwhelming..however, I will only limit it to two for now.
1. Is there one site that is better than another for webhosting?
2. Do I need a webhosting service or do I just need to register a domain name and then can start uploading my site?
Thanks guys and gals, any answers are welcome!

You need a webhost to upload your site to.
It is recommended that you don't get your domain name through your webhost service because if anything goes sour, you might not have access to the domain name.

Oh ok that makes sense. Is there anything I should look for in particular when comparing the thousands upon thousands that are out there?

To me, technical support and liability are important so I chose a local company. This means that my work hours are their work hours. Also, my laws are their laws because we are in the same country. Working with a host in a different country might be difficult in the sense that if they suddenly become uncontactable, what are you going to do? Fly over there with a baseball bat and find some fictional address?

I use Hostgator (http://secure.hostgator.com/cgi-bin/affiliates/clickthru.cgi?id=polish-boroski) and I would highly recommend them. $6.95 a month and you get more of everything than you'll ever need.
Stay away from GoDaddy (http://www.katgal.com/2007/05/godaddy-sucks.html) if you care about customer service. They don't give a d*mn about their clients. (Read my recent blog rant (http://www.katgal.com/2007/05/godaddy-sucks.html) on GoDaddy.)
I used to use Total Choice Hosting (http://www.totalchoicehosting.com/) (ironically a GoDaddy reseller) and they've got the best customer service I've ever seen. Their admin interface is quite confusing, however. But, you can always just email support and they usually get back to you within 20-30 minutes. Even in the middle of the night.

It compares tons of hosts for you and you can read reviews from different people.
