I am doing a movie poster and I wanted to know how I can get fog coming up from the picture behind the girl. I want this poster to look simple but scary anyone have any ideas or suggestions. The type I have is just a test don't think I will be sticking with it. I might use the Grunge font.

Thanks,

Nikki

There might be better methods but a simple way is making smoke shapes in Illustrator and smudging it in photoshop. There are also alot of cool smoke brushes out there here (http://browse.deviantart.com/resources/applications/psbrushes/?order=9&startts=1182758400&endts=1182844800). Be sure to credit the artists if you use their brushes.

Try uploading image your image (http://imageshack.us/) and then posting the link here.

It's far too small as an attachment to crit.

difference clouds with a touch of gaussion blur in photoshop will do the trick. take it a step further and do a gradient MASK on the clouds to get them to "vaporize"

I'm not sure what your copy is supposed to mean. Also, you should probably change the grammar to, "Jack may have fallen down the hill."

Overall I think you are getting close to where you want to go.

I would either make more room at the top for text OR have the text go further down over the ripper's hat.
The way it is now is too tentative (like you are unsure on where to put it). I also don't think that typeface needs to be as bold as it is.

You need to soften the edges of the figure (quite a bit), and/or have the fog come around the figure, so the fog is behind, around and in front of him (let it go to edges of picture too)
You are trying to create atmosphere. Read about, and look at examples of "Atmospheric perspective".

It doesn't look like fog, it looks like back-lighting/outer glow.

The red is too bright, looks jarring. I think you can deepen the red and still make the words legible by highlighting certain key bits. The blood on the knife and hands is WAY too bright. You'd be surprised at how deep or unsaturated you can make it and still have it convey blood.

The subtitle of the "Scars" movie is lost at this size.

could even try using some photos of clouds on different layers in different modes/opacities

Also,

I would make adgustments to the "Ripper" text so that it looks more like a splatter and less like a font.
You have repititions of the E, the R and the P and they all look identical (ie unnnatural). Make alterations to one of each so they look more handwritten.

OR
get out some india ink and a brush or pen and hand write "The Ripper". Do several versions. Do it fast, free and sloppy (like you are the ripper leaving your signature, writing it fast becasuse you need to leave the crime scene).

Then scan the paper, select the black and bring it into your piece, change color adgust layer filters/etc.

On the right path...

The blood seems WAY bright and over saturated though...

I'm not getting it.

Somethings off about the face. It doesn't look very scary and just looks like an average joe.

I think it might help if you hide the face.

The font itself is okay, but I'm always careful about handwitten fonts when the phrase has repeating letters. You have 2 R's, 2 E's and 2 P's, and they all look the same; makes it look like you just picked a font, typed in the title, and put no more thought into it. If you really like that font, try mixing up the capitals with some lower case so you can work in some variety. Better yet, if your illustration (digital or otherwise) skills are up to it, create the title yourself.

I also think tZ is right about the face. He would look more sinister if his face was darkened and the whole body was more of a silouette. This is a situation where the details make the viewer feel more safe. I don't think that's what you're trying to go for.

Edit: In other words, what Seamas said! :D

If you can get your hands on the Flaming Pear PS filters, there are a couple that may be useful for a fog effect.

If you can get your hands on the Flaming Pear PS filters, there are a couple that may be useful for a fog effect.

A fog effect is fairly easy to pull off without filters. You just need to know how fog works visually (or optically) and apply the knowledge.
You'll get a better fog look than any filter can produce.

It's just a very pronounced atmospheric perspective.
