There was once a famous Designer that said something to the effect of "My most difficult client is myself". This couldn't be truer...

I've never posted any of my work in "The Showcase" before. I guess I've always been too busy. However, the logo that I'm currently working on will mark my Wedding, which will take place in April of 2008. Of course, that means I need to hustle with Save the Date postcards, Invites, among other visual necessities. Tonight, I've finally reached a solution that both my fiancée and I can agree upon. After cleaning everything up though, I'm having second thoughts. This always happens every time I design something for myself. I get paranoid. This logo will mark my Wedding and it will make in impression on me for years! It better communicate and it better do a good job at communicating. I've decided to post these here to get some professional advice. What do you guys think?

We are having a simple Wedding. Simple decorations, soft simple colors, and simple pricing. Therefore, the logo must represent "simple". During my design work, I tried to keep my solutions as clean as possible. First, I began to play around with our initials, L & J (I'm Jon and she's Laura). This seemed a bit clique, but here's what I came up with... (see first attachment)

The first was dismissed as looking too much like the Nintendo Wii logo. The second was considered too abstract. The third looked too much like the Pi sign. After many more failed experiments with initials, I decided to move on to strict typographic solutions. After some serious thought, I figured that imagery might not work with the theme of our Wedding. Typography would be a more valid solution. One of the first solutions I came up with was the 2nd attachment.

This was the mark we both agreed upon. Priori Sans has always been one of my favorite typefaces; however, I use it with restraint. Its simplicity, as well as its serious, yet elegant tone echoed the theme of our Wedding. At first, I became a bit nervous about the "N/L" ligature, which connects our names, but then it began to grow on me. Colors (which will match the ceremony's colors) will later be incorporated. Laura loves it, but I need reassurance and guidance. I taped it on my bedroom wall so that when I wake up in the morning, I can get a fresh look at it.

Can I have some thoughts on this design? Am I out of my mind or am I on to something?

Any input would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

I really like the logotype. I like the NL union.

I imagine that it would look stunning blind embossed on some thick stock. The text for the rest of the stuff in grey or black but the logo not printed, just embossed across the stock at the bottom or top.

You have plenty of time! My boyfriend's brother is getting married in September 2007 and hasn't sent out invitations yet! Goodness that's getting me worried. I'm worried they will call me up in a day or two in tears asking for us to do a rush design job for them. We offered last year to do their designing and printing but nothing every came of it.

I'm not feeling the "others" monograms. They're too cold and infographics for me. Makes me think of public toilets not a wedding!

What a coincidence. I've just done a logo for a mate's wedding and they were J and L. They are tying the knot on the 14th July. They wanted a more traditional approach though...

The first design pales in comparison to the "logotype" in my opinion. The "J" is a bit of a tough read but it doesn't bother too much though. Overall, i really like it's clean simplicity. For the "others", I think the middle is the most successful. Arranging some variations as "LJ" might open up something new. Just a thought.

I like the connection of the two names in the spelled out version.

But i do think the J is lacking, and is not strong enough? any way to make it stronger by adding a swoosh some how to the J? like the R? Right on it looks like an "i" (ion)

also liked the JL last of the three because again, the connection. and did not walk away with it looking too much like the pi sign...

I like!!

On the first three, i kinda like the last one but at times I see two people...either hugging or strangling each other. maybe that is what marriage will be like who knows.

As for the Logotype...I like it but agree with the "j" comments. Also, is it ok for it to be Jon & Laura, rather than teh opposite? I know many times the woman is first, but then the A/J combo wont be there.

I really like all images posted in this thread. *thumbs up*

My friend designed his wedding invites himself. And for him being a really good designer, they absolutely SUCKED! I hated them... *shudders at the memory or them*

Thanks for all of the comments so far! They are very much appreciated.

As far as the "J" goes, that would be the Roman Priori San "J" designed by Jonathan Barnbrook.

I think adding the hook underneath might mess with some character consistency, wouldn't it?

I'll give it a try.

really like the text version, not too fussy and nice and clean, though have to say you must have a very forward thinking girlfriend!! I think it'll be all swirls for me if I ever make it up the isle :D

thought that the third version of the others looked like two people kneeling facing each other though it would mean that the J (YOU ;)) is the one with the wedding dress!

good luck with it though, youve plenty of time and to be honest there will be plenty more to fry your head over before then :o
