Does anyone have any recommendations for good books to read to learn ActionScript?
Inside flash.... under help menu.... title: "Flash help"... also see "Flash live docs".
books or not... you just need to experiment.
good luck.

The white and green one (it's part of a series)... it's got an eel on the cover (maybe a freshwater eel I think).
I wonder if there's an AS 3 one coming out though... hrm...
^ it should be coming out the end of july

I've got two books that seem to be working out pretty well. But I already have knowlege of other scripting languages.
Flash 8 ActionScript : Training from the source
Adobe Press
by Jobe Makar / Danny Patterson
And
Action Script 3.0 cookbook
O'Reilly: Adobe Developer Library
by Joey Lott, Darron Schall, & Keith Peters
The first book is good for actual functionality, the second is good for the new CS3 coming out and has advanced scripts.
Also there is a bit of difference how CS3 handles action script from all previous flash products. It's change the hirarchy so that you can code most of everything on the action script layer. Once you understand "packages" it becomes much easier. Still it does have support for all flash 8 scripting.
