Assuming that said site is kept up to date informationally, answer these three questions purely from an appearance perspective. Answer the first two in years and/or months and the second with a grade of A-F.
What is the longest you think a site can go before it needs an update?
What is the longest you think a site can go before it needs a full fledged overhaul?
What grade would you give this site as far as it being up to date, current, and appealing. You don't have to analyze the whole thing but you should look at two pages at least.

I'm very interested in everyone's opinion and would like to know what those in the field feel about these issues. It would be very helpful. I'll let you know how old this site is after a number of people respond and I'll give my opinion on the questions and site as well. Thanks in advance.

2 Years ... Would depend on Market Factors more than the design.

About an E - Talk about hard to spend your money. I like the front page though.

This really does depend on content, I have one client who has an update every week, another that I haven't touched their site for 6 months.

18months to 2years.

D. It would have been a C if I'd only seen the first page but at your insistance I checked out another and I didn't like the way the design changed completely from the front page.

Those are the kind of responses I was looking for. I appreciate your time. I would still like to see more though so tell your friends to respond to this. I am simply looking for opinion so any response is a good one.
Spug - I think that you looked at the update part as an update to information. I am referring to an update for appearance reasons. It does not include added pages or keeping the information up to date. Keeping this in mind, the content has less of a influence on the answer.
To all - To clarify, the second question is implying that you haven't made any updates in appearance. It does not include things like added pages etc.
To tZ - Could you answer the first two questions? Refer to what I have written here if you need anything clarified. I very much appreciate your answer to the final question.

Longest before an update?
I would think no longer than 6 months.
Overhaul?
depends. There are some sites I find so great that they shouldn't change a thing.
I give the site an F, but it's mostly cause I despise that font in the upper left hand corner of the main page. Otherwise, if that wasn't there, I'd give it a D.

I just want to make sure that people understand that when I say update, I am talking strictly from an appearance standpoint. I don't mean updating information on the site.

The problem is that this site is broken beyond repair in my opinion and I am also in the process of establishing a new corporate identity for them. This site is extremely outdated as it hasn't been touched appearance wise in about 8 years. It also breaks many of the most basic rules in design layout. At least in the sense that it doesn't have any unity. Every page looks different. I'm simply looking for opinions to see where mine stands amongst those of you that probably have more experience in web design.
As far as if it isn't broke, don't fix it, what exactly do you mean? Why do you think it works?

Sorry, I mean if a site does the job it is supposed to do, then it doesn't need to be updated. You should update a site when it no longer does what it needs to do.
You seemed to want to know how often the template/design of a site should be updated. In my opinion, updating the design of a site can hurt client recognition. If the customer is used to seeing a site a certain way, changing things around for no reason other than fashion or season is not ideal.
As you say, the site is broken beyond repair. If a site has bad navigation, bad colour combos and general bad design, then it is time to fix it.
A really well designed website might never need an overhaul.

I would say 1 year for a full rechange in site designs, but update your site ( with infio and such ) weekly or monthly. Overhaul... 2 years
