Sometimes when I'm packaging a file to my desktop, after I've finished with it or need to do over, I try to throw the file in my trash, I get an error message that the file is still in use, when its not. I have to close out Indesign altogether and restart in order to toss the file. This only happens sometimes, but its very annoying. Anyone got any idea how why and how to resolve? Its not a big deal, but its agravating!

are you on a pc? i get that too, but i think the problem is with the OS, not indesign. are you using thumbnail view? i suspect it might have something to do with that, but i'm not sure.

Yeah, my crappy pc at work. I figured it might be the pc/os prob, but it only happens with Indesign. no not using thumbnail view though.

it's happened to me on a PC (WinXP) too. Sometimes the only way around it is to reboot, which is a pain in the butt.

That happened to me the other night as well (I'm WinXP as well), I thought it was something I had done....now it appears not, that at least makes me feel better about what I am doing. Though, I don't feel better knowing it will likely happen again.

Edit: Tom....thanks for the link, have you downloaded from softpedia before?

I use Wholockme, and it looks the same as Unlocker.

It does kill the process associated with the file or directory in question to do
it's work. Just beware of that. Not that I've ever had a problem with it.
though now that I've written that...

tuliptree: nope, never tried that software before, just found it today.

Thanks for the link Tom, but it seems sucky that I'd have to actually install some other software to take care of this annoyance.

Morea, I never have to reboot, just restart ID.

I get that sometimes too. Sometimes moving it somewhere else helps or renaming the file can help too.
