 I have cs2 and for some reason I cannot open an eps file in Illustrator.
Any ideas? Maybe because I am on a PC and it was made on a MAC? I have never had this problem before!!
Any help would be appreciated!
thanks,
Lyn
EPS files are cross platform, that's not the problem.
More details, please...
One possibility I can think of is that perhaps the file is not really eps? Maybe it was misnamed? Do you know what version of what program it was created in?

Try changing the file type to .ai, or .pdf and opening it...
Was it created in CS3? If so, nothing you can do will open it. The originator will have to back save it.

This is all it says. I have never had this happen with an eps file. Maybe it is corrupt?
Thanks,
Lyn

How big of a file is it? Sometimes when I get larger .eps files over an FTP connection, they corrupt. Not sure why.... Perhaps that was it?

What happens if you place the file into Indesign (just to see if you can at least see what it should look like).

Er... the file is 100 b. Didnt even look :o Must be corrupt.
Thanks for all the input though!!

Just curious... did this come to you as an e-mail attachment by any chance?

Yeah, those are notorious for getting corrupted if they're not stuffed or zipped.

Yeah, those are notorious for getting corrupted if they're not stuffed or zipped.
Or if they go through an Exchange server. Thanks again, Microsoft.

Yes it did. And it was passed through a couple people. Should've known better.
Thanks!

Sometimes it's possible to fix those, if you're not afraid of a little hackery.
What often gets stripped is the info at the very beginning and end of the file. If you look at another EPS file through a text editor, you can compare the two files and see if that fixes it to add the missing info at the beginning and/or end of the file.

The problem is that certain PC server escape codes were created long before EPS attachments with their own set of interpretations for the same codes, became a working reality. They're both seven bit ascii. Simplest cure? Stuff into an archive (usually ZIP) before sending. Saves a ton of space too.
Of course, the newest twist is just how many spam blockers have added ZIP files to the list.
If the person sending the source EPS files is doing so from AI, it's much easier to get them to save it as a PDF instead (with AI compatibility ON, of course).

The other day someone sent me an inx file and instead of giving me an attachment, it gave me pages and pages of computer generated gobbledegook in the body of the email. The client zipped it and sent it through instead - worked perfect.

Yup, I pretty much zip everything that I send out, even if it's not big. It's like Tupperware for attachments. About the only thing that I don't zip are JPEG's and PDF's.

I've had to stop ZIP files for one of my clients, damned email block.
Now I RAR. Where there's a will there's a way

When I need to distract my bf because he is asking for something that is silly, I mexican wave my fingers in front of his face and say "Raaar!".
It stuns him for a moment and he forgets what he was requesting/suggesting.

Is that kind of like hanging ziploc bags of water in doorways to keep flies out? :)

When you move your fingers up and then down like a mexican wave pattern. Don't know what a mexican wave is?

Kool was referring to these:

Totally PG.

Obviously Kool meant waving some sort of pendant on a chain type jewellry back and forth, and using the sparkling reflections from it to put him into some sort of hypnotic state. Perhaps with some soothing words to accompany it.
I don't know what you were thinking of, Carter.
:D
Yeah pom poms was what I was talking about or jewelry, yeah that's it. ;)
