Hey everyone.

I was on an unexpected-rescue mission on Thursday (birthday eve) and Friday (birthday).

My brother had a load (Liquid sugar) to drop off (he drives an 18 wheeler-semi) and the destination was about 1hr east of where my grandma (90 yrs old) and uncle (has a large brain tumor, and is deathly ill) where living. We wanted to see him before he passed away, so we took the extra hour to go see him. When we (brother and I) arrived to where they lived. Unfortunately, we found out that they where in unsafe living conditions.. The place (trailer house) they where staying in was this guy my grandma met (about 3yrs after my grandpa died), for companionship, however he had left for 2-3 months at a time (w/o my grandma), several times, then the last time he did that, he came back married (cheated on my grandma). He fully admitted to my brother and I, that he had locked both in there own separate rooms, to prevent my grandma from tend to my uncle. Luckily a (different) Hospice Registered Nurse (who was assigned to both) was visiting just after we showed up.. My brother and I took the RN out for a little walk, to discuss the situation. She told us that it was her second day helping the other two, and was going to report it as unsafe. The guy who was "supposedly" taking care of them was throwing a fit when he found out about us making phone calls for some information/help. Then we found out that that guy/caretaker had (speculated) tampered with my uncles oxygen machine, so we called the service number.

The service company sent out a rep. The rep, he said (later) there was nothing wrong with it. BUT we had belief that there was issues with the machine, because when you turned it on, it shut off about 15 seconds later. After he came by to replace the machine, the caretaker was throwing a fit, and was yelling at my brother and I: "I have custody of these two, you can't do anything!", I told him to produce some paper work saying they are (he didn't have anything). We determined it was best to get the police present before we did anything (they did an investigation). The police told us the best thing to do was to remove my uncle and grandma from the care of the "caretakers" residence. My grandma was paying for his rent, but he was on the lease, so it was easy to take them. Unfortunately we didn't have very much room in my brothers truck (semi-truck with a very small sleeper).

So a visit turned out to be a rescue mission. Luckily we got there.. My uncle was also abused at the Hospice center by a caregiver (that was fired after an investigation), because my uncle had very very bad bruises on both his arms.

My grandma forgot to grab grandpa's ashes (Urn), she tried to go back and get it, but the "caretaker" wouldn't let her back in to get it. But now both are in Salt Lake City with us, getting the care that was really needed.

Well, it turned out to be a nice birthday (Thursday, and yesterday). Better than any cake/ice cream, or any present.

I still enjoy the recognition that you guys have given me.

Thank you very much. (sorry for the long story ^)

Yikes, Nav... I'm glad you got them out of there. What a scary situation. :(

Good on you for sticking to your guns, keeping your cool, and dealing with the situation outright. They are really lucky to have you!

Yeah, my brother and I where glad we where there, but we still feel bad that we pulled them away from what they had.. we told them to grab all legal paper work they have, a week or two's worth of clothes, and any Heir looms that the really really wanted to keep. plus my uncle's O2 emergency tanks.

It was interesting to try and get my grandma and uncle into and out of the big truck (about 5-6 times on Thursday evening), then on Friday, we started calling around locally here in Utah for hospice centers, nursing homes, and retirement centers..

Unfortunately yesterday was the same day my drivers license expired, I couldn't get down to the DMV to renew it, but I called the DMV main office and asked them (it is okay to renew it with in 6 months after it expired, without retaking the test), however I can't drive now.. LOL Too busy taking care of things for two other people that need it and forget to take care of a minor matter for myself. :)

I believe in things happen for a reason, and there was a reason we (brother and I), went up there. Glad we did.

Aww! Navian that's sad, but it turned out sweet after all.

Happy belated B-day!

May you celebrate many, manaany more! :)
Congrats to your granny for the long life, hope she lives to se 100! :)

I'm going to say something that may come off badly in the wake of Navian's account; I find that keeping aged family members in hospices and such as totally unfair. I suppose talking as an outsider it may sound rude, but here we have a traditional system that ensures the aged are taken care of within the family, by having the youngest of the syblings remain within the homestead or at least nearby to care for aged parents, so the cycle continues.

I have to admit that with the adaptation of Western values over the years, and general errotion of culture because of rural-urban migration, this system is under strain. This is another instance where we could learn from tradition to care for the larger family.
