Im doing a market analysis for one of my classes and I chose Leinenkugels as my brand to analyze (a beer company). They have stayed very local, and I don't know why. They are owned by Miller and have the means to go more national but I don't know how people outside WI would respond to a "microbrew". So, let me know what you drink... Thanks!

Newcastle Brown Ale
Smithwicks Irish red ale
Unibroue Trois Pistoles
Guinness
Sam Adams Oktoberfest
Saranac Black and Tan (a regional microbrew)
Oatmel Stout (by Davidson Brothers restaurant and brewery - actually, just about any of their beers are amazing, but this is another small regional place)

I chose the microbrew option since that would be my choice. Though with the bars I end up at, they're usually not offered. In which case, I get a Corona.

I go for quality above all else. I love nearly all the styles (with particular fondness for IPAs, Hoppy west-coast style ales, strong stouts and Abbey style dubels)
So "Local Microbreweries" doesn't fit my whole bill.
I like micros from the west coast (Rogue, LaQuintas, Anchor)as much as the ones on the East coast (McNeil's, Brooklyn, Ommegang).
Guinness might be mainstream, but it is also one of the finest dry stouts around (I like it more than Beamish and Murphy's).
I also love English ales, stouts and porters. Especially "real ale" aka cask-conditioned ales.
Also Belgium: Abbey ale, Trappist, Tripels & dubels, Grand Cru and of course Lambics (nothing more refreshing than a Lindeman's peche Lambic on a hot day)
Germany (& Czech republic) for Pilsners, Bock, Dopplebock, Marzen, weisse and Hefe-Weizen. I even like Rauchbier.
France even makes an awesome Farmhouse ale.
And as Morea pointed out Unibrowe of Canada is an amazing brewery. I have yet to have anything from them that I dislike.
I dislike: Light beer, Heineken & Stella Artois (there are so many better pilsners out there), "Ice beer", any of the big-producers' gimmick beers that are "smooth" or "have no after-taste". Dull.

I don't drink beer either. Actually, I don't really drink much alcohol. If I do it's a gin and tonic. My husband likes Guinness and Abita Wheat, but it's only available June through September.

I usually drink Coors these days. Growing up it was MGD. But if I'm eating mexican it's a Pacifico or Corona. Asian food requires sake and Asahi. But due to my pirate ways I've been drinking a lot of Rum and cokes. Then of course I LOVE Bloody Mary's and Tequila Shots.

Leinenkugels has made forrays into the East Coast from time to time. Right now they are sold in most of the Supermarkets I frequent (NYC and Westchester).
Every once in a while there is a shake-up in how distribution is handled on a national level. Some of it makes no sense.
I read recently that Anheuser Busch just bought major shares in another distributor, taking over some of it's portfolio (some of it being Miller products!?). For some reason, the paper claimed (one advocating for smaller breweries) that this will be good for the Micros. Go figure.

Old Peculiar and Newcastle Brown are about the only beerish/ale things I will injest. I like unadulterated spirits more, or wine (pretty much only reds though). I will drink white russians occasionally Dude.

Old Peculier (peculiar spelling!) is very, very nice. I haven't had it in a long time (10 years I think). I recall seeking it out when in England a few years ago, had other beers by Theakston, but not that.
I'm more than a little surprized at the numbers of people who dislike beer.
Probably because it's late-day Friday, and the beer lovers have started on their second oat soda by now.

07-20-2007, 10:37 PM
trouble with Old Peculier is that it tastes so damn good, but if you're a 120 pounder like me, you can only get through about one and a half pints before you feel the need to be horizontal. I can drink straight vodka and keep up with the men, but old pec damages me big time. Two pints and I'll be calling God on the big white telephone!

I'll have a Speights, mate. Old Dark's bloody good, but a bit on the damaging side. If I wanted to play it safe, I'd go for the distinction, and if I'm feeling cheap, I'll have the gold.

At bars, I normally drink their specialty. At a Japanese Bar, I'll drink Asahi, otherwise it's probably going to be a local beer like Macs or Monteiths.

There's generally 3 beers I drink:
Newcastle when I have the money.
Iron City when I'm in Pittsburgh. This is a truly awful beer that you just learn to love.
And any of the Erie Brewing Beers. If anyone gets a chance give them a shot. If nothing else the alcohol content is pretty high. I personally drink it for the taste, but a couple of Railbenders will have you feeling good.

Personally I prefer imports and microbrews. There is something about U.S. mass produced beers that just isn't right. (Bud, Miller, etc.) They seem to lack flavor compared to everything else.
My favorite import is Guiness. You just can't be that think rich flavor. Mix it with Bass to make a "Black and Tan" and I'll be happy all night.
For Microbrews I'll take Snake Pit Porter from the Oaken Barrel in Indianapolis. OUTSTANDING! The Gnaw Bone Pale Ale is pretty good as well.

We named our black lab Guinness for the obvious reasons. Yum! I too love Newcastle, I'm a fan of dark beers and nut brown ales. I also like Chimay.
Morea, I've had Saranac Black and Tan, I like Saranac!
As of late though, we've been having MICRO micro brewery beers--my husband has taken up brewing again after about 10 years, and has been making some yummy concoctions. Mmmmm....yeast...mmmmm....fermenting....

You know, I can actually drink PBR too, Neballer. Which surprises me, because I usually go for the microbrews.
My default at home beer is Sierra Nevada pale ale, but if I'm at a place that has a wide variety to choose from, I like to experiment. I tend to go for the pale ale style, I prefer that flavor, and sometimes IPA's but I can usually only have one of those, they're so heady and will knock me out faster than the pales do. I like wheat beers too, on occasion.
I like Newcastle, but only on tap. I find the bottle version is rather appalling, from a flavor standpoint.

I prefer the microbrews, but I chose mainstream since that's what I usually get.
Microbrews are alot more expensive than the mainstream.
There's some good mainstream ones here though, like Alexander Keith's, and Sleeman.

I used to drink WifeBeater but I woke up with tastebuds one morning. ;)
I always go for the Microbrew.
Bishops Finger is nice, but recently I've started to brew my own. I've got a batch of Skullsplitter in its final stage at the moment. Fingers crossed it should hit about 15% proof. Got a fair amount of Chocolate Hops in it as well to sweeten the taste.
4 more days and let the drinking commence.

Any good shows coming up? :P
Depends on whatcha like. I went to see Dweezil Zappa play Frank Zappa songs at the Rave on Saturday - cool songs, too many hippies. I would have rather seen GWAR who played there Friday night.
Rage Against the Machine and Queens of the Stone Age will be at Alpine Valley on 8/24 - one of three shows in the states that Rage will be playing this year. That should be pretty cool.
Can I vote on the poll Jacki, or would I taint the results since I'm a Wisconsin boy?

Speaking of microbrews I just hit the trifecta brewery tour in Milwaukee (Miller @ 10:30 am • Sprecher @ 1:00 pm • Lakefront @ 3:00 pm) and then hit up the Milwaukee Ale house for Dinner.
I have to admit i was pleasantly surprised by Sprecher beers - I have had a few in the past, but on the tour I was able to taste ten that they had on tap. I have to rework my list of favorite beers because of that tour.

MD, may I recommend checking out the Milwaukee River Brewery Tour? Take a boat ride up the river and stop at The Ale House, Lakefront Brewery, and Waterstreet Brewery (I dont think they hit up Rock Bottom). It's definately a good time :) I cant believe you had time for all those tours. At least 50% of the time, Lakefront's sold out when I get there. Did you hit up Wolskis on your way home for a free Lakefront pint?
No Wolskis - To be perfectly honest we were pretty messed up even before the Ale House. The tours are pretty easy to hit but you are right Lakefront is the tough one to make it in to. (we had some help) You need reservations at Sprecher and Miller's tour holds like 100 people and runs on the half hour. (They have a couple Linies on tap)
If you have never been there - take the sprecher tour. It's 3 bucks, you get 4 beers (10 on tap + 2 premium reserve tastes) and you keep your glass. I have been on it twice and both times we acquired a few more drink tickets from people who didn't use them all.

When I'm out and about, MGD or Bud about 75% of the time, or a microbrew the rest of the time. I usually start out with a tastier beer, then after I've had a few I'll switch to mainstream swills - it all starts tasting the same at that point anyway. I keep the fridge at home stocked with Killians Red. Sprecher makes some good beer - I picked up a quarter barrel of their special amber for a party once. Tasty, tasty.

If I drink beer it inevitably makes me want to eat corn chips. Lots and lots of corn chips. And if I eat corn chips.....I want to eat it with salsa. If I eat corn chips and salsa, then I want a side of guacamole with it. And then.....eating corn chips, salsa, and guacmole...makes me want to drink more beer!
