Greetings all! Name's Jay, aka Helix. Just wanted to drop in a line and make myself known. I'm starting to notice that I'm kind of an anomaly in here... I wanted to study graphic design/animation back in high school, but my parentals ultimatum-ed me into a different field.

Flash forward 5 years, and I'm an architect who doodles too much with a love of design and hatred of pretty much anything else. Unfortunately, when you start in the industry (or work in it period.), you never get to design, and always do pretty much anything else which, obviously, I hate.

So, despite trying my damndest to enjoy the pitiless grind, I'm thinking of getting back to my roots in GD, where I should've started in the first place. I'm looking into picking up side jobs and possibly a full time spot, but my portfolio needs some beefing up. I'm hoping by coming here I'll gain some friends and feedback that can help me on my way. Cheers!

Welcome Jay. Hope GD gives you what Archi doesn't.

That is so very comforting ^_^. Thanks for the warm welcome everyone.

And thanks Budafist, I already know that it will. Now if I can somehow capitalize on all the architectural knowledge I've got...hmm....

You can specialize in graphic design for architectural firms, perhaps that will bring out the best of both your worlds. Landing a graphic design job at an architecture firm may be simply a matter of luck - being in the right place at the right time and hearing about an opening at a place large enough to have its own in-house department.... If you freelanced, you could market yourself as specializing in architecture.

There's a trick to graphic design in archi-firms. They tend to send out for freelancers more often than not. My current firm is large enough to have in house GDs, but they pay them crap. Then they call out to freelancers and pay them stupid amounts of money (2k for two exterior renders...c'mon...). So if I do end up pursuing that particular method of madness, it'll be from a freelance stance.

I'm considering marketing as a specialist in architecture, but I also know apparal and print media, so...I don't want to paint myself in a corner so to speak. The only reason its a specialty is because it was the closest major I could get to GD without cheesing off my parentals, I dabbled in everything else. I just have more work xp as an archi than a GD. Any suggestions for getting more GD xp?

My daddy was a draftsman in the 70's and 80's. When I was a kid, I wanted to be an architect. Then when I realised it wasn't as creative as I needed it to be, I decided on GD instead. My little sister is gonna be an architect though, so we'll still have an architect in the family!
