If you imagine the image without the white stripes: It would be a low contrast image and then in illustrator I would just drop over the evenly spaced white boxes. Well, that's what I would attempt to do first anyway.
And then I would go and vomit from having looked at those stripes for too long.

My first answer was going to be, err yeah... Step and repeat mate. Amateur. ;)
But then I saw our Lord and Savior and then I thought COOL... How on Earth do you do this?
I can't see any pixel differences but I'm assuming that there are some, very subtle changes in the white or possibly the black lines aren't actually a solid colour, subtle changes in the black maybe?
If no-one gives a satisfactory answer I shall be experimenting later. I likes this alot. :D

Well, zooming in real close, there's no vertical variation in the thickness of the lines, but there's a small variation in the colour, so I'd say obeseebee had it about right. Then again, looking at the avatar, there may have been an unfair advantage involve in spotting it :D

Yeah, I should have mentioned I've worked with stripes before!

there a few ways you could do it.
Operationally I would open the picture you want to show through in Illustrator, convert to grayscale, turn down the transparency, and then just lay the black lines over the image.
I used to make these psychedelic pieces where I would put concentric alternating white and black circles with the transparency turned down over a grid of white and black lines like that. I used to put some bends in the lines to make it a little more interesting though.

low opacity, maybe grayscale image. as for the lines, 10x10 pixel square saved as a pattern and just applied to the layer.

That's how I would do it!

Can't figure out if this is quite the same effect, or maybe fiddling with the image opasity and line thickness/spacing would make it work better, but this is just black lines with a low opacity black and white image under it...

While we're on this subject...
I think you're talking about doing this in Photoshop. In Illustrator you can save patterns of lines as swatches, but they kind of work like clipping masks, the shape that you choose to fill it with is basically a window into the pattern, and if you move the object the pattern detail doesn't move with it, the shape moves accross it like a view-finder.
My question is: Is there any way to cause the pattern to bind to the object and move with it?

Looks to me that there's a slight variation in line width. Purdy cool I'm gonna try one. Prolly best done in illustrator
Heh, I'm viewing from an LCD monitor right now, and I can't see the pictures in either examples! :D
I'll look at it from another computer later, on CRT.

Think I got it.
Using Illustrator step and repeat say a 3x800pt line 6pts, make compound path. Take your lineart image and create a clipping mask using this.
Then the same with a 2.75ptx800pt line.
There's a bit more to it, but that's the gist of it.
That one looks good, Matt. Even on LCD, I can half-see the image. :D

I don't mean to ask the obvious, but why would someone want to use this effect. I thought it was going to be one of those hidden 3D optial illusions, but it turned out to just be annoying.

The easiest way to replicate that effect is to think really hard about Jeebus when you make the lines. The power of God will do the rest. If that doesn't work, you might want to try dancing with a few rattlesnakes first.
