Accckk! Just got a summons yesterday. This is the second time in 5 yrs I've been called. Last time I just sat there for about 6 hrs before they called me up and then they didn't pick me, but I still dread it. :(

^^The only problem is, you'll probably get a guy trying to contest a traffic ticket.

Hey! I didn't get paid for jury duty. My company at the time didn't pay me either cuz it wasn't for over 3 days.

They actually forgot about our pool. We sat in a room from 8am until about 1:30 before a bailiff apologetically came in and asked if we wanted to order out for lunch. Then we sat there until 3:30 because the last case of the day decided he wanted a jury trial for a DUI then at the very last minute changed his mind. The defendant's lawyer probably told him to quit while he was ahead. We were done to a turn by that point.

Here, the court pays a grand total of $20 per day. (which is just a joke, if you asked me) but it looks like my Co. is going to pay me after all. Anyone know of a sure fire way NOT to get picked?

'Any person who has been arrested is guilty, no matter what. Cops don't make mistakes when slapping the cuffs on people!'

I get called in for jury duty, but they never pick me cause my grandfahers was a NYC detective for 25 years. I guess the think I am biased or something.

Cops don't make mistakes when slapping the cuffs on people!'^^ By the way, I know that CkretAjint is just kidding here, but don't try this. Most judges aren't amused by this or the "I'm a racist, so if the defendent is black, he probably did it" bit, and will slap a contempt charge on you pretty quick.

The good news is that most trials don't drag on like the OJ Simpson case, and will usually be over in a few days. I think it's rare for a trial to last more than a week, unless it's a murder case or a complicated lawsuit.

I got called only once. The day I was supposed to report, my step father in law died. He was a cop and everyone at the courthouse knew him. When I called and told them, they thanked me for informing them he had passed and excused me.

Jury duty is ultimately the duty of every citizen if they get called. My sons scout leader was asked what he thought should be done with sex offenders. He responded that they should be made to stand on the steps of the courthouse and be shot multiple times in strategic places until they die. He was immediately dismissed.

Know? or just assuming?

KIDDING! I am just kidding on the above statement by me. Please ignore it if you find it offensive.

The way to not be chosen is to not register to vote. That is, or at least was, the list they use to pick potential jurors.
Pick yer poison.

I don't know what is worse, not voting. Or getting paid a little amount of money to sit in a small room all day long. *sigh*

Well, I don't know about other states, but here in Fla, they don't go by the registered voter thing anymore (although I am a reg. voter) Now they just go by drivers licenses. Maybe it has something to do with how confused most florida voters are?! Re: hanging chads:rolleyes:

Very true. Us Floridians are quite 'different.' Ha!

If it's a civil case where someone is sueing for money, tell them you have a real problem with excessive cash judgments. No trial attorney wants to hear that, and you will be exscused.
Worked for me.

I've served 3 times though I always get booted from the trial during jury
selection. I'm the son of a lawyer, so I guess that's a red flag. The pay
does suck. $10 USD per day here + round trip bus tickets. I hear federal
cases pay more.

I've found that it's a great time to catch up on reading.

I got called twice within 2 years.

The first time I sat in a jury pool for a day and a half, watching bad movies (Runaway Bride, yuck), reading paperbacks. Never got called.
I was given a slip of paper (and told to make back up copies and keep the original in a safe spot) saying my jury obligation was fulfilled for 4 years.

Then two years later I get another questionaire and summons, but for Federal jurisdiction, my previous duty was no good.

Luckily all I had to do was phone in to see if I had to appear. Being that it was late December, the these courts usually slow down for the holidays, so I never had to appear and my obligation was filled.

I was origninally kind of pissed about this, but now that I know I'm getting paid for the day, I think I'm going to go to the bookstore this weekend and get something good to read and fulfill my civic duty! (Plus, I just realized I can sleep an hour later, because the courthouse is right around the corner from my house!)

Just tell the judge you are a firm believer of capital punishment. You might set a world record of being released of jury duty, now if they paid better, it might not be so bad. (pay you in a day what you would have worked-via contacting your employer for wage information)

By the way, I've never been called to jury duty. :p

I've never been called and never will be.

Having a criminal record excuses me automatically.

My wife is not registered to vote and I am, she has gotten the letter 3 times and I have never gotten one. The first 2 times she was told even before the report date that she did'nt need to show and that last time was right after the triplets were born so I guess that excuse was all they needed to hear. If I was called and had to serve I would do it no problem, it's something we all should be more than willing to do.

I'd be more than happy to do Jury Duty. I think I'd be damned good at it, I'm a very mechanical type of guy anyway.

Just never going to happen.
