:p Just dropping in to introduce myself! My name is Jennifer (Jen) & I'm a freelance graphic artist in New Orleans, LA. Graduated from East Carolina University w/ a BFA in GA in 1990 & worked for various ad agencies, corporations, etc. until I started my own business in 2000. Grew up in Raleigh, NC - lived in Richmond, Maui, & now New Orleans. I've been doing very little work for the past couple of years due to Hurricane Katrina, being pregnant w/ twins & then raising them (they are 1.5 years old now). Business is starting to pick up again. I do all print work, right now (brochures, invitations, print ads, signage, direct mailers, logos, letterhead, annual reports, etc.) but would like to learn web design in the near future.
I'm getting ready to purchase a whole new Mac system & software. I'm going to look to see if there is a forum topic for hardware to get some advice on what I should get. My current computer is ANCIENT!!!! I'm still running system 9!!!! :(
Looking forward to getting to know you all!

Hey Jen! Welcome! I'm about 2.5 hours away from you in Lafayette!
My brother lives in New Orleans (mid-city). My parents lost all in Katrina. They're in the process of rebuilding. My band plays New Orleans sometimes. Maybe I can give you a heads up and you can come out and give us a listen!! We recently played Jazz Fest in May and N.O. Seafood Festival at the old Mint on Esplanade last month. Fun stuff!

Hey there! What's the name of your band? Definitely give me a heads-up!
Sorry your parents lost everything in Katrina. But glad they are rebuilding. I really wish NOLA wouldget back to "normal" or better. I love this city! I'm actually right by Ochsner Hospital - in Jefferson Parish. We lucked out with the strom here. Just some minor wind damage - no flooding. But it delayed our detached garage rennovation for amost 2 years (it's just now complete) - my office is out there. Another reason why I haven't been doing much work until lately.

My band is Goldman Thibodeaux and the Lawtell Playboys. I'm female but I still get to be a playboy!!
My brother is the most enthusiastic New Orleanian I've ever known! We grew up there and all my family is there. Most of them are from the Irish Channel. My parents were in St. Bernard Parish. I think they'll be surrounded by construction for the rest of their lives!

Hi! Thanks for asking about New Orleans! It's coming back, slowly. The touristy parts never really flooded (French Quarter, Garden District, etc.). So tourism is a big factor in keeping the economy up. The infrastructure isn't here, though. Schools are slow to come back. While there is a huge concentration on rebuilding, there are still huge parts of New Orleans that have not been touched since the storm. It's really errie to go through those parts of town. It's mind-blowing that it's been almost 2 years since Katrina hit. We actually live in Jefferson Parish, w/in a mile of Orleans Parish & most of our city services are back. And our house/neighborhood only had minor wind damage - so we (my husband & I) are hardly effected by Katrina anymore in our day-to-day lives.
All-in-all, though...the situation is really sad. Everyone hopes that New Orleans will rebuild & be stronger & better than it was before. But it's very slow to happen.

I really hope this happens as well. I've only been to New Orleans a couple of times, but it's one of my favorite cities ever, and not for all the usual reasons. I love the spirit of the place.

I was feeling pretty good about how the city was coming. Then I got the call this morning regarding the random murder in the Carrollton. Ugh - I knew Tony White fairly well. He's the guy that got killed. We used to exhibit photography together through the Photographers Guild of Central Louisiana. Great guy and a really good photographer.

UGH - that sucks! I'm so sorry! I didn't know him. I don't live too far from the Carrollton area & we have friends that live just a couple blocks away. This murder really scares me - it's not gang-on-gang (which most murders here seem to be). He was clearly in the wrong place at the wrong time. Sorry for your loss.
