There are lots of bike enthusiasts on this forum... this is the thread to showcase what you're riding.

Let's see those bicycles!

Here's my bike. His name is Zem. He is a Trek 4500. In this shot he is wearing his big knobby tires for downhill mountain biking:

http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c343/gdfmorea/zem-bromont.jpg

Here's Zem with his semislicks on (for road and bike path riding, which I do more often):

Here he is with my semi-slicks ready for road/bike path rides. Trust me... thin, high-pressure tires make a world of difference when riding on the pavement/hard packed surfaces!

Well, here's my bicycle. A hybrid that satisfactorily gets me from work to home faster than any car on my commute. The plastic bag on the saddle didn't come with the bike, I had to modify it. My bike is called, erm, Mike the bike (I didn't realise we had to name them).

Commuting on a bike is the best thing ever. Not because I save petrol, not because it keeps me in stunning physical shape, but because I LOVE cycling fast through queues of static vehicles - best feeling in the world! And I also like to race lorries at the lights.

I love speed on a bike!

Best top speed for me to date is 77kph (47.85mph)!
Morea was going to pass me, but we ran out of road. She hit 77.25kph (48mph)!

We're always really, really careful when hitting these speeds though. There's no traffic where we do this. It's a long, newly paved country road.

The last bike that I had was one of these:

Except the color was the classic Schwinn blue. (I don't have a picture, because my dad still has the bike.)

I miss that bike. The best bike ever!

mine's a kickass bike in matt black with some meaty suspension... but got no pics i'm afraid... and i've been known to call it 'B!tch'... especially when it fell off the roof of my campervan doing 50mph down a busy road (luckily it didn't hit any of the cars behind me...) now the handle bars are slightly off kilter and the brakes rub on the rims sometimes... but it still works fine enough.

Wow. When I said fast, I should have said "fast in comparison to a non-moving car." 48mph! Can you get prosecuted for speeding on a bicycle?

bummer, Captain... that must have made your heart skip a couple of beats!

Yup, Nav's right... you can definitely get traffic tickets on your bike. As a result, you can be penalized with points on your license, just like you can with mishaps in a car.

The top speed on that hill is 45mph, so I wasn't *really* speeding. ;)

yeah, i guess the driver of the car behind me had to 'check for mud' too :D lol
I was sooooooo annoyed with everything that day too... the wind was unbelievable and 3 miles further on, a 30 mile stretch of the road was closed due to high side winds... probably should have made the closed section 3 miles longer huh?
anyway, i recovered the bike amid lots of scowly expressions from other drivers and was going to chuck it, but i decided a bit of attention might just save it... £80 later on... it works enough to ride. :)

I'm encouraged to get off my arse and buy a bike without a motor attached after reading this thread. Apparently they're cheaper in petrol than my Ducati.

Is there something in particulat that I should be looking for in a road bike, I'll also be doing some minimal cross country, the route through the fields in the summer is far shorter. :D

morea
07-31-2007, 03:01 PM
you won't even want to attempt any x/c on a road bike... you might want to look at "mountain bikes".

I'm not sure what you've got access to as far as brands, but I absolutely love my Trek. It's really versatile - I use it for downhill and cross country with the knobby tires on, and then I switch the tires to semislicks for road riding. Mine's a hard tail and I added a suspension seatpost to help absord some of the rock impact along the way. Sounds like you won't be doing anything that will require full suspension.

If you aren't sure that a mountain bike can make for good road riding, let me just tell you that MyST and I rode 67.82 miles yesterday - that's 109km.

I'm looking at a 7 mile round trip each day. With one big bloody hill in the middle, up on the way there, down going home again.

captain spanky
07-31-2007, 03:11 PM
yeah don't get chunky bumpy tyres if you wanna go on a road... although they make a really cool noise on freshly laid tarmac, they really take your energy away.

in my experience disk brakes are a bit of a waste of money too, they're very expensive for what they are... but others may disagree with me. I have a mate with a £1500 Marin bike with hydraulic disc brakes and he swears by them.

quick release wheels are a godsend as well.

and always get some mud flaps. you don't want to be that guy with a brown line up his back after a small shower. flaps are goooood.

We rode together... we each rode about 68 miles. Yes, really.

You will find that mountain bikes come with knobby tires... but you can buy semislicks at your local bike shop, and they are inexpensive.

OK, question number one. What's a Hard Tail Mountain Bike?

Exodus
07-31-2007, 03:25 PM
OK, question number one. What's a Hard Tail Mountain Bike?
A bike with no rear suspension. They may or may not have a front suspension. My bike has a front fork suspension that can lock-out. Meaning, when I'm going uphill, I will turn a knob on my fork that prevents the suspension from moving. Thus, eliminating the bounce effect and wasted effort trying to climb an incline. Then, I twist is back to my desired suspension setting before I go flying back downhill. :D

SpugNothuson

Right then, sounds like the beast for me.

bump! Did you ever end up getting a bike, Spug?

I went to the bike shop today for the first time this year. We ended up riding 2040 miles (3283 km) last year, so I totally burned out my drivetrain and have to replace it before I can do any riding this year. I want to have the bike ready to go as soon as the roads are clear. (I'd consider riding outdoors in the winter, but I'm worried about the salt from the roads damaging my frame and components.)

Anybody else have any bike photos you want to share? I'm going stir crazy here! :D

Quebec City (around 3 hours from here) has had something like 17 feet of snow so far this winter. I drove up for a funeral a few weeks ago, and the snowbanks were up the the 2nd-story windows.

edit: average for them is only around 12 feet.

Yup been cross crountry skiing, you've got to to like the snow.
Winter bikes are more like monster tire types. Think of snowshoe
wide tires with Nokian small studded rubber

I just accidently discovered this old thread.
Here's my bike, if anyone's still looking. It's a Gary Fisher "Wingra". Sort of a hybrid commuter style. I bought it last spring after my Kona "Dew" was...(pounds fist on table, wipes away vagrant tear, knocks back another shot) stolen(!). My wife rigged up the basket.

Thanks to Gregory I just found this thread today. It makes me want to go out and pick up a bike. I haven't ridden since my first bike was stolen almost 6 years ago :p

I'm hoping to move closer to school next semester so that would be awesome having the option to ride to class.

would it be odd that I do not know how to ride such a machine?! I have waterskied wakeboarded, surfed, scuba dived but no biking for this one =(

What the!? I mean, no, there's nothing to be ashamed of. But didn't you even have one as a kid?

I did, but right after I started to learn blades n boards became a standard of perpetual motion, so I kinda fudged in not continuing to learn how to ride one =(

Well, learning to ride is certainly a rite of passage. I remember my brother and a friend on either side holding me upright on a bike that was too big for me. Then they propelled me across the driveway. I managed a pristine straight line...until I crashed into the fence across the road. After that I learned to steer.
But it must be easier than your other activities. I can almost ride a skateboard, but I have to sit down.

I bought 2 cheap Beach Cruiser bikes for my wife and I, since we recently moved downtown. My new favorite hobby is downtown biking! :D

If I wasn't living 30 mins from work then I would no doubt have one, take lessons, and ride that sucker. When i was in europe, I got some baffled faces when I dropped the info on them.

Wow, yeah its just one of those things you think of as a given so it seems odd when you meet someone who never learned. Kinda like meeting someone who hates pizza, or likes Wesley Snipes movies.
