Is it true that if you say those same phrases with different tone (loud, soft, angry, whispering) in your voice, you could be saying something else?

I'm not sure, I'll have to talk to my cousin who took Japanese in highschool for 4 years, Cantanese Chinese in college, and Taiwanese on his mission to Taiwan. Unless someone else knows.

Yes, different intonations could be completely different words. Or at least, for those of us who are not proficient in the language.
