The very first thing I'd check is your fonts. If you by any chance have a corrupt font or one that Quark thinks is corrupt, you will crash.
Check Usage to be sure you don't have any in the list you aren't using visibly in the doc.

Another might be if your images aren't updated or have been moved since the last save.

Prefs are in User>Library>Preferences

Do you by any chance have Acrobat? Can you print to PDF and distill to see where the error might be?

edit: I meant print to Postscript and distill...

there are no unused fonts in usage - there are just 3, all helveticas - i have no reason to suspect they are corrupted - how would i check? have already sent to the printer and they found no problems with them -
however i have many fonts managed by fontbook not used in this doc.

i used search to verify - i do not have a user/library file - no "user" file - plenty of library

i have distiller but not familiar with this version - how would i proceed to use distiller to find my problem -

thanks for your help with this - sorry to be such a know-nothing about your suggections

Your Hard Drive>Users> Your user name> Library> Preferences

I usually hand-collect my quark files because it tends to want to screw around with fonts.

The only way to check a font for corruption is to use a utility like FontDoctor. Font Book won't help you there.

There are other reasons why Quark crashes. Urstwhile will be along in a few I'm sure to give you other options.

Actually, PD, thanks for the kind words, but I barely use Quark anymore. :o

I think all the suggestions you've made sounds good.

There's also a font cache folder that Quark makes, it's in the applications folder, under the title of "JAWS". Try deleting the contents of that and see if it helps.

Another thing you could try, in terms of isolating whether your problem is with fonts or images, is try to do a collect for output but uncheck the box that has Quark collects the fonts. If it still crashes, it's likely your problem is with an image instead.

The name of the preference file, by the way, is "com.quark.QuarkXPress.plist" (no quotes).
