but it looks fine on my screen????

haha im just kidding lol......

but seriously, I make a RED -

cyan - 0
yellow - 100
magenta - 90
black - 20

even when cyan is dropped to 0, why does it come through purply?

it'll have something to do with the printer/profiles/media possibly.

Is it happening just with your printer or have you tried a couple of printers?

To kind of follow up with Buda, what is it coming through purply on? An inkjet printer? An offset printer? What's the output device that makes it look purply?

Something's fishy. If the printers is using cmyk inks and there's no cyan in this solid just ym and a 20%k then there should be no purple. Are you sure the offset printer really printed it offset and not on a digital press? Grab a loupe and check the printed job for a rosette dot pattern or round dots. If you see none it maybe digital.

Either that or the offset printer has some rather serious contamination in his ducts.

Also check that they're not doing something seriously crazy with your file, I've sent a CMYK document to a printers before and they, for some unknown reason, turned it into an RGB pdf and then let it hit their RIP that had a seriously crap profile on it, my once beautiful CMYK images turned into the most lifeless pieces of crap ever!

Not a happy man here, the Snarl was evident on my face for a cgood 5 mins straight!

When doing colour work offset, always demand to see a colour proof. The printers will match this. You can ask for a press pass too. That's when you actually present for the start of the print run. They can tinker a little with colours on the press - but don't tell everyone! We'll get every customer coming in here demanding a press pass!

Press check here.
A press pass gets you in the skybox at the stadium... :D
