I've been interesting in type design for a while now but dont know where to start. I've played around with fonts by turning them into vector drawings, but who hasn't? I have done alot of research, but have found nothing substantial. I even joined forums like typophile, but eh, even there the info was wishy washy. Anyhow I was wondering if any of you had any ideas.

are you looking for a program to create fonts? I think fontographer is a standard one, but i think that's available on macs only.

i use a mac for my work so thats not a problem. Programs and books on type theory are what im looking for. It seems most schools dont get into type design until masters, if at all. Something about being more time then its worth...

logo font & lettering bible by leslie cabarga (http://www.amazon.com/Logo-Font-Lettering-Bible-Comprehensive/dp/1581804369) is a pretty good book to start off with.

^ I don't think type primer is what he's after.
Type primer is pretty general and your looking for books that discuss how to create letter-forms- right? Then again… do you understand the basics? If you don't understand the basics then type primer could be a good place to start.
There are some good books out there for what you want to accomplish but, I can't remember the names right now.hmm…

Good point tZ. Its great guide to classifications, understanding the way letter forms developed over time and tecnical things like whats the little tail on a lower case g called. Maybe it will help technically. I can’t think of any books specifically on creating letter forms.

i understand the basics, imho, i know terms, some history, and I am currently working for a graphic design firm as an intern but act more as a entry level designer.
But for arguments sake lets assume I dont. Im looking for broad suggestions. Im not beyond starting from square one.
