I would get one from your printer if they have any, or else get out some measuring tape and make them yourself.

I mean, there are not many "standards" when it comes to these. Every supplier has different cuts on their boxes and packages.

The most common way would be to create it in Illustrator using the pen tool with no fill and the stroke set to a spot color not being used in the printing. You could also search for die line or die cut tutorials on Google. Google is your friend. ;)

Have you asked your teacher about die lines? Or are you just assuming he's too stupid to teach you? He may just be assuming you and your classmates already know how to do this, so it really doesn't hurt to ask him about it.

Honestly, you'll learn more anyway by doing it yourself rather than finding a template. I guarantee you will have to make a custom die cut at some point in the real world, so there's no reason to not learn how now.

What are you looking for specifically? To save you money making by new dielines by downloading from the internet and then getting your printing company to build the dieforms, it's more cost effective to find out what dieforms you printer already has and use them.

Printers keep the dieforms from previous jobs so that they can use them for any new jobs that come in.

I work at a printing company and we have a storage room of different dieforms. Every size of round stickers, many different presentation folders etc.

I agree with Budafist. If you are planning to have these designs go to print, you should see what the printing company has already.

We've priced custom dies for customers before and they've all freaked out over the cost. (not sure why, though I never saw the actual prices)

Heh. I should have worked were Buda works. The dies we kept were under that part of the roof that leaked all the time.... Rusty die cuts and warped boards...

There are a few things you should try:

Maybe sit down with your teacher one on one and ask more specific questions about it, i can't imagine him being that stupid if he has any real world package design experience.

Or buy a product with a outer box/carton, take it a part and examine it flat.

Also, there are many books that have package design templates.
i have one called "The Packaging and Design Templates Sourcebook," comes with a CD of all the dielines as EPS files, only cost around $50. I highly recommend it if your serious about packaging design.

Good advice Silence. Taking apart things will teach you more than reading anything will about dieforms. Take apart anything you can get your hands on!

*Please use my advice with caution. I will not be held accountable for the taking apart of the of the world*
