I am creating a booklet that can fold out. Basically it has four 6x6 pages on one side and 4 on the backside of the paper. Originally I had made the layout with the cover being on page 1 of InDesign but with the way it will be folded its actually "page 3" on the front side of the paper if it were printed out all on one sheet of paper.

My question is ..... how should I send it to the printers? As two 24x6 (one for front and the other for back) or a pdf outputed from the 8 page InDesign setup? I hope that makes somekind of sense to someone :)

so the FINAL FOLD size is 6x6, but it will all be printed as a 24x6 unfolded doc? You need to setup the doc 24x6 w/ bleeds, and then maybe use guides to mark where your folds are going to be, and layout the file that way....thats how I'd do it! :) I DO suggest you talk to your PRINTER FIRST before doing any work on this though....that way you can get a clear understanding exactly how they handle files, and perhaps have a best suggestion for you on how to work it. :)

You'll definitely need to talk to the printer, as it's also the case that each panel will need to be slightly different in size so that it will fold flat.

Thanks for your replies. Sounds like I need to make a call to the printers :)

At ours printers we would ask for the job to be done like so;

8pp roll fold (it keeps folding into itself) job to be sent as flat sides i.e. 2pages in the document.

The front and back pages (they'll be next to each other) to be at finished size 6x6 the next page to be 1/8" shorter than 6x6 and then the last page to be 1/4" shorter than 6x6.

The flat page size would be 23 5/8 x 6. Comprising of (width measurements only) 6 + 6 + 5 7/8 + 5 6/8

This is because when the folding machine picks up the flat sheet to fold it we need to have a gap between the folds, they cannot butt up to each other, this causes major problems. The printers you are using may have a different value to 1/8" it depends on the machine tolerances and the capabilities of the operator.

Call them to doublecheck.

Hope that makes sense.

Provide a mockup as well. For the printer and for you to check that your page orientations are correct when folded. Sounds like you are going to have some rotated pages in there.

Good advice PD. Anything you ever do should have a mock up sent to the printer. If it's non standard or has anything that could be considered tricky or different, you have even more reason to do it.
