Husband's company advertised for a document something-or-other/graphics person 29 hrs a week so I registered online with the company (pain in the battody, art resume just doesn't translate well sometimes!). Hubby also sent my resume (newly revised and approved with advice and critique from placement counselor at college) directly to head of the department.

He got an email this morning from lady saying that there was no mention of whether or not I knew Microsoft Word and whether or not I had a secret clearance. He emailed back saying that, since I've done transcription work IN WORD for eight years and that the job skills listing that I was PROFICIENT IN WORD at the bottom of the resume meant that yes, it was safe to assume that I knew Microsoft Word and that since the job description stated that a clearance was DESIRED not required that I was applying for the job anyway.

She emailed back and said that since they work in a closed area, they couldn't trust just anyone and so a clearance was required for them to work in that area (so why not put REQUIRED in the description?). Also, they did a lot of inserting tables and graphics into Word documents and that a lot of times they had to work overtime in order to make sure the tables were lined up and everything was arranged, it was a very time consuming job, did I think I could do that type of work? I guess she also ignored the part in the skills section that listed my proficiency in Adobe CS if she even knew what the hell it was.

I told hubby to email her back, telling her that I had no problem using Word but I felt more comfortable using InDesign for page layouts and basically, just never mind, thank you anyway, have a nice day.

The whole deal just really pissed me off, questioning my proficiency yet they're "working overtime, long hours" because they're too cheap/ignorant to use the correct software for the task.

Excuse me, my attitute is showing.

IS that really what you want to do as a designer? Put crap in MS WORD? I'd say move on to a real design job! :P

And why is your hubby doing this for you?

Sounds like a typical government or government contractor response. I've got a boatload of stories I can tell dealing with these knuckle heads hear in DC. Since 9-11 security clearances are like gold. Even if you have a clearance and you're moving up to a higher clearance in a different department it can be difficult let alone someone without a clearance. I'm sure the person that contacted you was an HR person.

No, you're right, I DON'T want to spend my time and education making tables in Word but it was a job and I'm applying for pretty much anything around here that says 'graphics' in the title.

And the reason hubby did that was because he works there and he was emailing directly to the person because it's a 'who ya know and who ya blow' kinda town.

lol who ya blow....that makes a bit more sense now in respect to your hubby doing that i- i'm sure you like the idea of working close to your hubby too...but don't sell yourself short, your a good designer, and you deseve to do more than layout in word.....run run run! There HAS GOT to be something out there better than that!

Thank you, DesignVHL, for the vote of confidence. Helps my attitute a whole lot...not to mention the fact that I just got a phone call for an interview tomorrow morning with a company who could be considered the 'competition' to hubby's workplace except they're 10 times bigger!!!!!! :D

(Doing the 'up yours' dance...wiggle, wiggle)

May not get it but at least, they're willing to TALK to me...
