I've just been given the opportunity to design actual retail products, based on my designs. This is a first for me ~ my background is in print & web design, but this (rather HUGE) company has noticed my potential and are waiting for my pitch.

How can I ensure that they won't take my ideas and run with them on their own?

Me = small time, relatively unknown
Them = internationally renowned, big/powerful/intimidating, etc.

I'm hoping there's someone here that can offer a bit of insight. Thanks in advance!

Contract contract contract. :)

Don't do a thing for them until you have one signed and in your possession.

Yes, I completely agree. Can anyone refer me to samples, specific to this type of situation?

Yes I agree too, You shouldn't let anyone still you're design, their are too many stealer I see online claiming that its they're own design well infact it's not! You can also put copyright in all your design to make it sure!
